It's just the next (actually still upcoming) version of Android, following Marshmallow which followed Lollipop.
Doesn't even have an official candy name yet and will probably be a while before it gets rolled out to any devices.
Time will tell if it's "better" than the previous versions, there will probably be the usual process of bugs to be worked out and with all the different variations that will be released some will no doubt be more buggy than others.
If you follow the Android news feed here or on the Early Bird app you'll see all the announcements regarding the various features of N that are being discussed.
And +100000 about Crash, very happy to see him still active and posting.
