android newb.

Hi all, I just wanted to pick your brains. I am a iphone user, have been for a few years and it is time to upgrade. I have been listening to engadget podcasts and have kind of been following android, not much though. Since it's time for a upgrade Ive been looking at the samsung captivate. looks like a awesome phone. I am drawn to android since it seems more open, I want to be able to play more with it. I was wondering with android can you upgrade the os? when gingerbread drops will i be able to pop that on? Id want to wipe and install a generic version of android, is that possible?

It depends on the phone. Some older model Android phones can only be updated to 2.0 or less. Most (if not all) phones that are currently available right now should be good through at least gingerbread, if not higher. It really just depends on the hardware and what requirements the new version has.
