Android not a PUSH mail?

Hi All,

My Galaxy S K-9 doesn't "PUSH" email instantly to my handset. What should be the problem? Are there any settings in K-9 or Android cannot PUSH email at all(only POLL)?

Android can certainly push email. K-9, I'm not so sure about. Make sure your phone is set up to auto sync with servers and background data is enabled. Then look through K-9's settings to make sure it's set for push and not poll. I don't use K-9, so I don't know how to check it.

BTW, do you know other push email app? I am using following email accounts on mobile:

1. Personal Gmail
2. Yahoo small business mail
3. Gmail small business mail
4. Other personal emails

The Gmail app that's built in is push I think. but I stopped using push since it uses up more battery than polling AFAIK.

I use Gmail at work, and push all my other email accounts to it, into different folders. I use K9 to poll 4 or 5 of the 15 folders in my Gmail account. I do it manually, but there are polling and pushing options.

K9 definitely supports push IMAP. However, it does not support push POP3, if that even exists, I'm unsure.

But Gmail by default uses IMAP, so you should be fine with K9.

You could push POP3 theoretically.... but to be truly technical/pedantic nothing is actually push.... at all.

push is an "invented" name for lightweight polling. Like "cloud storage" is to "server/internet - based storage"

Even in the days of WAP push the phone needed to check-in and maintain a connection to the cell towers.

The way push is handled mostly these days is via what's called C2DM (Cloud to device messaging). The phone polls special Google server and app developers "register" with the Google server. This way only 1 polling connection is ever needed, saving user battery.
