Android or iPhone - Help!

Hey guys

I currently have an iPhone 3GS as does my missus, and we're about to upgrade in May. Now over the last couple of weeks I have decided that I want to get myself a tablet, I can't afford an iPad and I can't afford a top of the range tablet but I have found a few others in my price range that I like the look of.

This has made me look into Android as a whole and I am liking what I see so far, when we first got our iPhones, they were undoubtedly better than any of the Androids on offer at the time, however, am I right in thinking that this isn't really the case anymore?

Just glancing at the Orange upgrade page, I can see that the Samsung Galaxy SII looks lovely, has slightly better specs than the iPhone (as far as the camera etc goes) and the Android market isn't too sparse when it comes to games and apps either.

So what do we do? Do we just go with what we know and stick to upgrading to the iPhone 4? Or do we look more at an Android phone? What are the pros and cons? I knwo the package is going to be cheaper per month which is a plus in itself as we pay

Given what you listed I feel making the switch to Android will be no problem. You may have have the occasional "I used to do this on my iPhone, how do I do it on Android" type question. This is normal until you learn the ins and outs of Android. Sarch the forum and you should be able to get most questions answered.

1. Yes, Android has all these including Viber.

2. Android phones have some great music player that will play a wide range on music formats including MP3. There are also third party music apps in the Play Store if you do not like the stock music player.

3. Most mid to high end Android phones will support a 32GB SD Card.

4. All the current Android phones support this.

Android vs iPhone debates can go either way

apple has great software based phones, and the apps to back it up, however things you want to do to an iphone you have to jailbreak it to work.

to do those same things to android, you just download a home replacement app, or do it from the OS.

from your message, it seems android is perfect for you and the missus. try it out and see which you like better

1. She has the usual suspects available to use i.e. Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Whatsapp and Viber (she's Irish and her friends use these to talk to her for free)

Got all that, although some of it may look different than she's used to. The Facebook app on the iPhone is a bit better, but best to go to a store and get a demo of each to be sure.

2. She needs her music, she doesn't want to lose it if she moves, obviously she will lose anything bought and downloaded into iTunes but will the Android phones play her catalogue of MP3, which she got from backing up all our CDs over the last few years?

Apple dropped drm from all iTunes purchases at the beginning of 2009 so you'll be able to simply copy those files to an Android device and They'll play just fine. For those songs bought before that, you may have to test because Apple had been removing the DRM from it's library prior to that. I also recall Apple allowing users to re-download tracks as a one-time feature for those who lost their libraries. The new copies would be DRM free. Android will be able to play her iTunes library and any playlists she's created will easily copy over.

3. She also hates the fact that the iPhone has naff all space on it, so anything that supports up to 32GB is awesome.

The SGSII comes with 14 GB of internal storage expandable to 46 GB with the addition of a 32 GB MicroSD card.

4. She needs it to have 3G and Wi-Fi obviously.

You may want to look at the Galaxy Note. May fit your needs for both a tablet and phone in one device. And it will have Ice Cream Sqndwich by May as well.

Then there is the Samsung Galaxy S3 phone coming out in a few weeks, with all the latest bells and whistles.

You can easily move to Android from iOS. I did it about a month ago. No problem.

I think we're pretty settled on either the Galaxy SII or the SIII depending on how it looks, the note is still a little small for a tablet and a little big for a phone in my opinion.

Just spoke to Orange and they said we have until July 2nd to wait to upgrade for free yet anyway

Android allow more freedom and custom-ability compared to Iphone, or compared to any Apple products. Depending on your android phone, most up to date ones are faster than Iphones.

1. Almost all our android phones support those and more...
2. Android supports many music formats, and there's many music players to fit the extra needs/looks.
3. Android phone support up to 32GB MicroSD Cards, but we're able to support 64GB if we format then on computer as FAT32.
4. Of course android has those, we even have 4G WiMax and 4G LTE; way better than 3G
