Help android phone has a conflicting ip address with home wifi repeater bridge

erdos

Lurker
hi,

I setup a wi-fi repeater in my home to extend the range and provide network connectivity to my bedroom pc that doesn't have a functioning wi-fi card.

I use Linksys wrt54GL router with DD-wrt firmware, the repeater was set to 192.168.1.2 static IP, unfortunately my android phone also has the same IP address, thus I can't seem to access the WebUI for the repeater. I'm not sure how to have the phone release the 192.168.1.2 address that the repeater is using.

any ideas?

thanks

I *might* know what is going on...

Possible that the phone has been permanently assigned 192.168.1.2 by association to the MAC address of the phone. Some routers will do this even though they're using DHCP. Mine does this with any devices it connects to. It effectively acts like the phone has a static IP, always giving the phone the same IP through reboots, disconnects, whatever, rather than the expected DHCP behavior of assigning the next available IP address in order.

IOW in your case the phone got assigned 192.168.1.2 first and it was tied to the phone's MAC permanently. Now the router refuses to release it despite you giving that IP as static to the repeater.

Try turning the phone off, or at least WiFi. You should be able to get into setup and give the repeater a new IP.

thanks for the reply!

I was able to access webUI after turning main router's wi-fi off and resetting the repeater. and use parameter recommended by DD-WRT repeater bridge setup procedures. my repeater is still set to static ip 192.168.1.2. and it's working fine. I just can't access its webUI when the android is on.

i'll play around with settings from main router (a Dlink 2750B) more this weekend to see if I can assign a different IP for the android phone.

Don't try to give the phone new IP - give the repeater a new IP and leave the phone as is. Makes no sense to change the phone.

after an internet outage with my ISP yesterday, I disconnected the main router to reset the internet services. upon reboot, the phone has been assigned a different IP address at 192.168.1.7.

the issue has been resolved. thanks.
