Android pie: white edge around icons?

Hi,

since upgrading to Android 9 (pie) i have these stupid white edges around some (but not all) icons.

What is this and how to remove these? (Hopefully while sticking with Trebuchet launcher)

Go into your desktop settings and choose a different icon

It looks like an attempt by the launcher to impose a uniform style (in this case round) on apps that don't use adaptive icons.

Since the launcher is responsible for desktop and app drawer appearance I'd suggest checking the launcher's settings. It may be that this is its default when running on android 9. I'm using Nova on 9 but as the attached screenshot shows it has an option for this (the tick box at the bottom).
