App Inventor Android Studio App Tutorial Issues

Hi, newbie here. I am trying to develop an app according to the Android Studio tutorial (https://developer.android.com/training/basics/firstapp/building-ui). When I tried to add the PlainText box and Button, I kept getting the following errors:

I'm not sure what I did wrong, since I was dragging the PlainText and Buttons from the Palette onto the Design. These are the instructions from the Android Studio tutorial:

If you're using the latest Android Studio, be aware that the course has not been updated to reflect changes to Android Studio's menus , UI and functionality.
