Android SysLog?

In Linux, I love the syslog. I often just let a terminal running tailing the syslog so I can see what's up as I work on a Linux box.

Meanwhile, my phone (rooted Optimus T running CM7) sometimes acts funny. At night, it at times has shut off during the night. Being this is my alarm, this presents a problem. If it's plugged in it never exhibits these issues.

Just now I looked down on my desk and I saw it was rebooting, completely unwarranted. I was wondering if there's a syslog I can view and maybe post here to get some sort of idea on at least what my phone is thinking as it does these actions.

There is a 'logcat' that you can access once you install the Android SDK. Install the SDK, load up ADB in cmd (or terminal in linux), log into the ADB shell and type logcat and you'll see the log scroll as the system uses resources. Can be done without root. You can also save logs, but I'm sketchy on the how to's, as I'm new to ADB and haven't bothered to learn all that much about it, yet.

Not to discount the value of the SDK. I have it installed on several machines and the adb interface does a whole lot more than just read log files. :)

Oh, of course. But for a quick look at the log to try to find a rogue app, those logcat apps are invaluable. Plus, most of them don't require root, which is good.

I like the "OS Monitor" app - it lets me review the syslog and share it to email or DropBox. (Root not required :) )
