Help Android TV Box Newbie here

I just got my Android TV Box QuadCore Kit Kat... I don't know how much detail to put here, honestly... but I was happily using it to play MKV files and it stopped working... it says I need to try custom codecs. I downloaded some on the device, but it won't open them... I think? I'm not sure.

Also, I was playing the files via USB using the file browser, and I foolishly selected to "always" use the MX player when opening files. Now I would like to try switching players, but I can't seem to undo that "always" selection. Is there a way to work around that? A way to undo that selection?
