Android up-date

Hi
Has any one else experienced problems with an adroid up-date.
twice yesterday, i have had messages saying 1 of 2 android up-dates ready to be installed. I reboot the phone as instructed but then get a black screen with a triangle in it. I then have to take the battery out to get the phone going again.
Is this up-date needed? how can i get around the phone freezing every time i try to install?, any help greatly appreceated

If you are not on a custom ROM, then I suggest you to backup your data and do a factory reset. That should clear anything blocking the update.
Only after the update, install your data.

Thanks for your reply, I wouldnt know a cutom rom if i tripped over one!!
i have a nexus one, when i turn it on it has a white padlock at the bottom of the screen, does this tell me if its a custom rom?
It has 2.2.1 andoid version
kernel version 2.6.32.25-the official-audioMOD root@abomb-laptop#1

Be careful and don't do an update just yet. You might as well have a rooted phone with a custom ROM. In this case an update might brick your phone.
It is better to ask this question with full software details in Nexus One forum section.
