Android update

Google has limited upgrades to the latest version for its devices to about 18 months. At least that is what it is committing its handset manufacturers too. That is a bit short too I think.

The 3-4 years for the iPhone is not correct though.

The iPhone 3G (July 2008) got updates till the end of 2010 (4.2 is the latest AFAIK) so that is a bit more than 2 years.

The iPhone 3GS (June 2009) is got iOS5 (less Siri), so it is being supported for at least 28 months, though the 3GS is still a production model.

The Nexus One mistake as the internal storage. Had they given it more it should have been upgradeable.

Apple does not support their products for 3-4 years, that would mean all the first generation iPod touches and phones would be upgradeable and they aren't, they can't even run iOS 4.0.

Bottom line is both companies have different business models, they both have pros and cons, pick one and deal with it... or go to WinMo, blackberry, or use a non smartphone.

I am a proud Nexus One owner and I don't feel that way at all.

I was never promised unlimited upgrades and don't expect it. I have been at the leading edge of the the major and incremental upgrades and that was all without rooting or "hacking". I wanted the pure stock Google experience. I have recently rooted my N1, but it wasn't necessary, just another step in my own education.

For the extended functionality, Android needs to be rooted just as often as iOS needs to be jailbroken.

Now, Google evaluated the Nexus One and decided not to put users through the angst or frustration of an unsuitable update, unlike Apple. Hop over to an iPhone support forum ans ask any 3G owner what they thought of iOS. 4 ;)
