Android vanity email?

Scamp

Newbie
After reading the various reports about how the Android will be tied to a single Gmail account, I decided to create a separate Gmail account for use with the android phone I hope to have one of these days....

I went with android dot 301 (for my area code). Is anyone else setting up a vanity email address?

I don't know. Part of me thinks it's a good idea to get a spare email address, but the other part of me wants to be able to use gmail and gtalk without having to explain to all my contacts that I had to get a new email address for my phone.

I'm wondering if this is going to be a permanent thing. Overall, I really don't like this idea.

will i not be able to use android to catch my non-google mail? i have my own domain and emailserver...
thx

Just setup a forward. Name the new account like ... youremail-mobile.

T-mobile has stated they will only support a single Gmail account on the G1. They are leaving it up to third party developers to create interfaces to other mail servers such as Exchange.

I agree, but my problem is that I use more than a singe email account. I have business, personal, moonlighting, spam pot, etc. and the G1, from what I have heard, will only support a single gmail account. So I don't see a lot of options.

I can set the other accounts to forward to the new master account, but I don't see an easy way to work it so that the replies come from the correct mailbox. I guess you would have to use the browser to login to each gmail account and send from there. What a pain.

Log into your default Gmail account.
Under Settings > Accounts.

You can have your account default Gmail account retrieve email from your other Gmail account. You can even setup filters to automagically label your email that comes from your other Gmail account.

This is all just speculation, but it should work!
Then when you check your mail, you can setup a bookmarkable URL to show only labelled emails to your new Gmail account.

It was all sounding very cool up to that point.... Still I will certainly give it a try.

The issue is that I (like many) have multiple Email accounts for different things. One for family matters, one for business, one for when I sign up for something online and the need an email, etc...
Proper labels and forwarding to ONE single Gmail account would keep you from logging into different accounts EACH TIME to check your mail.

Everything I mentioned in that post works fully 100%. I use that method to retrieve one Gmail account into my primary and they are labelled.
However, assuming we can create custom shortcuts to any URL, we won't know yet till we try it.

Yes, checking email is not a big issue. However when I reply I need the email to show my reply as coming from the original email address and not the android mailbox.

So:
Fred sends an email to my personal account: me@gmail.com

Fred's email is by rule, auto-forwarded to: my.android@gmail.com
and automagically filed into the "personal" folder on that account.

Now I read the email and reply. The reply need to come from me@gmail.com rather than my.android@gmail.com

(Note: I just made up the email addresses used in this example)

After properly setting it up, you should see something like this.

While I am logged into 'me@gmail.com', i can receive emails sent to 'my.android@gmail.com'.
In the compose screen i can select which of the two emails i want to use as the sender.

There's also the issue of contacts:
I don't want all my gmail contacts in my phone. Particularly given gmail's nasty habit of adding EVERYONE I ever send email to to my contact list. And there are contacts in my phone I don't want in gmail. And I don't even have the issue of multiple addresses to worry about.

I saw a video with an asian dude on a bike (?) discussing contacts and how it was all synced with gmail... but I don't want this. Is anyone familiar enough with the SDK to know if someone will be able to create an alternate dialer and contact manager? And will I be able to make these alternatives the default?

I'm certain that with time, these issues will arise and developers can create an appropriate application for this need. I too don't want all my Gmail contacts on my phone.
But I suppose that as long as we have grouping of contacts, that will work fine (for a while).

I realize it will work.

But this just seems like such a poor design decision to me. It's rather disappointing.

I'm really looking forward to some actual reviews from people who've gotten their hands on one.

And I'm really sort of glad I live in Canada and need to wait a while for them to be offered here. Come on LG or Samsung candybar/flip-phone!

I just got to thinking. With the whole Vanity *Android*@gmail.com type email address.
I think it will greatly simplify things if I just set that address up, and upon activation of my G1, Ill just start afresh with a whole new address. A non-cluttered GReader. Zero spam in my new Gmail account. etc.

I'll set my default email to forward all android related emails (this forum, other Engadget news, etc.) to my new addy and just go from there.

If I like how it all works, I head that a 'hard reset' type method can wipe it out to start anew with a different email address. Or until someone comes up with a method to use multiple emails. Like Greasemonkey has a script, i think, that lets you log into more than one Gmail?

i dont know the sdk, but what i heard its possible...

I finally got around to download the SDK so that I could play around with the emulator tht comes with it.

In the emulator there is no sign of linking the phone to one particular google account. Could this be a T-Mobile thing? And if so, why would they do this?

I was able to enter contacts like on any other phone I've ever had.

For all you geniuses....try loading the EMAIL application. I have 2 different G-Mails, as well as my AiM and my own e-mail from my website, all running on my G1. Using IMAP mind you. Wtf!? Christ, why make a mountain out of a mole hill.
