Android version 9 change

Since my phone was updated with version 9 I can no longer selectively close applications.
When I press the bottom left button now it shows the active applications and my only option is to "Close All".
I used to be able to selectively close applications as I often wanted to keep a couple applications open and not be forced to close all. Is there a way to selectively close applications?

With my OP 6T, I can close the application I want by swiping up on it leaving the others open.
Worth a try.

I've got a Huawei that's been updated to 9, Pie, and I can still selectively close apps by swiping them away.
