Android vs. Blackberry - My opinion

I got the Motorola Droid X on release day and have since had a hard time putting it down. I am coming from the Blackberry Curve 2 on Alltel and figured I would shed some insite for those that don't know if they want to give up blackberry for android.

Android over Blackberry
There is a lot that I like more about my Droid X than I did about that blackberry.
1) The O.S is a lot "happier" looking. The OS on my curve 2 just seemed dark. The color scheme, and such.
2) leads me to the next thing. Android Market.
A) Also brighter. I hated going into Blackberry App World and having it be so dark. Just not my thing.
B) More Useful apps. I would go into BBAW all of the time and never find that "got to have" app. Now every time I go into the Market I feel like there is always something for me.
3) I know I'm gonna get it for this one, as this is the one thing that people say BB does better. but I like email on android more.
4) No more lag. 'Nuff said.

Blackberry over Android
1) A different tone for everything. I had a different tone for every email address I had, every person, every thing.

Overall, there isn't much that I prefer with my blackberry. BB messager was ok, but never really used it.

I mostly agree with you. I've used a BB tour and the OS is so dark and minimal. Things like settings and the browser are just black letters on a white background.

I also think that once you get a touch screen (and Android's physical buttons), its hard to go back to anything else. Its just seems clunky scrolling a courser around on webpages on the BB. Browsing is done much better on Android.

What also is great about android is the back button. The dedicated menu button is great on the BB, android has it too. You really don't see how intuitive it is to have a dedicated menu button until you use a Nokia device or iOS and you always have to find where the options are.

Amneon, at the very lease you can pickup Handcent so that you texts receive a different tone than your emails.

And I think you can set each individual email account to a different tone.

I went from a BlackBerry Storm to the Droid and I am extremely pleased. I felt with the Storm that you had to practically go through a maze just to set preference or clear the cache. It's all in one place on the Droid. Also, I had no need for Excel or PowerPoint. I wasn't using it for business so what was the point?

The Droid has been so much fun as it has been functional and useful. For once I am satisfied with a phone that I will not need to look for upgrade.

Ok...well I just might upgrade to the Motorola Droid X

I will have to look into that. Funny part is, i picked up my curve 2 yesterday and trued using it as a touch screen.

From a BB Tour to Hero and have not looked back!

I was slightly hesitant at first, until I used my friends Incredible..my mind was changed within a minute to drop BB! He applied to be a dev with BB years ago and they recently contacted him right before switching..he will now be an Android dev. BB requires many more hoops since apps have to be approved by Rim. Android, well we now how much the Android market rocks over App World!

Email is as quick and reliable as BB! Many more apps which have made the Hero 100% more useful than the Tour ever imagined! Wifi is amazing! Sprint never received any touch screen BB's and was not interested in Verizon so Android was my best bet. Next upgrade I might consider an Evo.

The switch could not have been easier! Used sync to receive all my contacts and calendar entries from Gmail. All my ringtones moved right over when I inserted a formatted sd card with my old sd media card dir's on it.

I know that you can assign a different ring tone for each contact. I had Halo for my mom, the Space Marine for my brother, and Duke Nukem for my dad. I had a few others that were appropriate to some of my friends too.

Also changed all my emails to a cartoon boing, all messages (SMS) to a cartoon boink, and left the rest as normal. I did have Handcent installed for that though.

Having said that I lost all those settings when I wiped and re-installed my OS to a better version and haven't bothered to set it all up again.

Went from BB Bold 9000 to HTC Desire (2.1).

Big downsides for me:

- keyboard - i am still getting used to the on-screen keyboard and my speed is waaaaay down and errors are waaaaay up
- battery - the battery life on the Droid is 30-50% worse (possibly because I use it more

Big upsides for me:
- Market - breadth and depth and usability of apps is far better
- interface (other than keyboard) is leaps ahead obviouslly - I don't miss my trackpad/trackball
- although I loved BIS/BES and push email - I am now so happy with Gmail integration that I couldn't see going back.
