Android with Google account but not Gmail

Hi all,

I know that you need a Google account to get the best from Android and to use the Play Store. Does the store work with just a Google account that doesn't have a Gmail component? I'm not too keen on Gmail any more and am moving email to other services and so don't want to keep Gmail if I don't need it for Android?

I think in order to set up a google account, you need a gmail account. Without a gmail account, there is no google account. You can always forward mail from the Gmail account to other accounts yes?
