how do I change my ringtone for messing.

I am going to assume that you meant to say messaging. To change the default you can go to menu>settings>sounds>notifcations. If you want your SMS messages to have a different ringtone from the default, you open your messaging app and select menu>settings and change the notification sound there.
However, if you want a different ringtone for each person you will need a third part messaging app that supports it. Handcent comes to mind as one that does that.
