Okay... finally the churning bile and broiling adrenaline rage has subsided sufficiently to allow me to post something that isn't a stream of wanton profanity 
Bought a pair of Wileyfox Swift 2+ phones for the laddo and me loaded with Android ver8.1.0, he's up and running and quite happy to leave the Google Play defaults as factory set. As for myself I don't see any reason why on this green Earth Mr Google should have any involvement whatsoever in my contact list and removed any permissions, what that means (as far as I've found out from days of forum searches) is that it effectively renders My Contacts inaccessible/unusable? WTF???
This app seems insistent on funneling everything through Google's front door and I'm having none of it on principle alone quite apart from the security issues, the privacy issues and the damn well taking ******* liberties issues! In desperation to coax a reaction from the Contacts app I restored all permissions but still it barfs out it's familiar "Couldn't save contact changes" message. No courteous hints as to why it couldn't which would have been useful. I've had enough of this invasive bloody time-vampire called google already. So...
Any Android whizzkids on here know where the switches are to nuke Google's nannying interference?
