Help Annoying/basics

Just a couple of things I wanted to see if I could clear up, looking for advice as to alternatives. I have an Apollo i5800, it had a few annoying little nuances when it had 2.1, and since upgrading to 2.2 a few others have risen. I love the phone, it's very good value for money and has some features that I'd only expect of a much more expensive phone, but the things pulling it down really are the absolute basics.

Firstly, ever since owning the phone I have no confidence in the alarm, it seems to be temperamental and consequently I'm having to use a second phone just as an alarm. Would love to be able to solve this, haven't tried using the alarm since upgrading to 2.2, was there an update made that sorted the alarm problem (which I believe was a common problem?)

Second thing is since upgrading to 2.2, I can't put the phone on absolute silent anymore? I can put it to vibrate, both via turning the volume down and selecting silent after holding down the power button.

A third is no longer being able to mute incoming calls, which I used to be able to down by pressing the volume down button on the side of the phone.

Just out of curiosity, are these Android problems or specific to the phone? Because I've got an upgrade soon and intend on getting the Galaxy S2, and would really like to not have these little annoyances.

Any advice greatly welcomed, thanks!

I've found since 2.2 that the alarm goes a bit mad. Even after turning off the alarm it will go off the next day sometimes. The only suggestion I have is to try an alarm app from the Market.

I know what you mean about the silent/vibrate issue. I could change from silent > vibrate > ringtone and vice versa using the volume button in 2.1. I'm pretty sure I read this was removed in 2.2, not just our phone. You can change it in the sound settings so that when you turn the volume right down it will be either silent or vibrate, but you can't have all three any more. I've downloaded an app called Ring Toggle which is easier than going into settings all the time.

I don't know anything about the incoming calls thing though.

Are there alarm apps available that will work even if the phone is off? I'd hate for something as petty as an alarm to make or break me buying another Samsung, but it's starting to annoy me that I have to keep a second phone just as an alarm, and if I'm ever away from home then I don't have a reliable alarm at all; really would've thought an alarm was one of the most simple things to get right on a smartphone.

I've no idea about alarms turning the phone on. I don't think they do, but do a bit of research. I may well be wrong.

Can't you just turn the sound down/off at night? Even put it in airplane mode if you need to save some battery. You can get apps that automatically turn sound, wifi etc etc off at certain times or locations.

Failing that get one of them round alarms with bells on top like they have in cartoons.
