Another Easy Question

I have been looking around this Forum for quite a while and haven't seen an answer for this question.

I am considering abandoning Sprint and signing up with Verizon. I would prefer to buy a late model Verizon Android phone from a friend who has canceled his account (and paid the ETF). If I do this, will Verizon set up my new account without a 2 year contract?

I know that Sprint will not permit this. Even if you provide your own Sprint phone, they require a 2-year commitment.

Thanks for you insight. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Short answer: Yes, you can start a new line of service with the device you got from a friend, without a contract.

Long Answer: You'll have to go through customer service to get the contract canceled (since most stores will still put you on contract when you start service), but by just telling the Rep you speak to that you started the line with your own equipment, you should be able to get it changed so you're not under contract.

If you have your phone already, don't go to a store. Order you service from the VZW web site. You'll have a chance to review all the terms before you finalize your order.

You Can get service without contract. First you must be sure the contract tied to the phone you are talking about is indeed terminated. you will however be hard sold on signing one. If your credit check is favorable, no deposit will be asked. All non contract services are pay ahead (as opposed to prepay) and overages are more expensive than with contract. Basically you are buying a used phone and are choosing to use VZW as your service provider. I did the same thing before I upgraded due to great deals (plus I wanted a smartphone) and hooked back up to a contract.
