Android Question

I've read so many threads on this problem, this is getting tiring.
I have an Android KitKat, and my internal storage is 16 gigabytes. The "total space" says "16.00GB" but the "Available" space says "2.34GB".
I did the math, and I've only really used about 4.5 gigabytes of data. So where did the rest of my 12 gigabytes go?
The Internal Storage bar shows around a fifth of it green, about an eighth of it everything else, the rest is the black color of "Available" yet it claims I only have 2.34 GB.
I would take a screenshot, but I don't have a camera atm.
Any help on this?
AND YES, I'M SURE I HAVE ENOUGH SPACE.
THE ANDROID SYSTEM DOES NOT TAKE 12 GIGABYTES OF DATA. In fact, it's only in the megabyte range.
