Help Another new one

Mcgee10

Newbie
I have about a billion questions but I'll read here a few days first. Driving into a Android phone head first. Calling it a phone first seems wrong the phone is more like an app, the phone part of it seems like the least of it.

I'm just going to ask 1 question now. I know that the menu button is a press and hold left of the home button. Mine only brings up widgets, wallpaper, and home screen setting.
Every search I do I get press and hold that button well something not right here.

Hi, can I suggest that you put the "Settings" icon on your home screen, this will allow you to change settings at will. Nearly everything you will want to access is in the settings. Phil

Hello and welcome to Android Forums Mcgee10 :)

Thank you for your post.

There are currently 35 different models of the Samsung Galaxy S5 and over 3,000 different stock Samsung firmware versions, worldwide, covering 3 different Android platforms, Android 4.4.2, Android 4.4.4 and Android 5.0.0. Not all issues will affect all models or firmware releases and your answers to the following questions will help in the forum's answers to your specific query.

#1. Could you post your Model number and Android version...

To locate these, go to...

Settings > More > About device > Model number and Android version

This will give you the model of Samsung Galaxy S5 that you have and which Android version you are on.

#2. Your current Firmware, (not just Baseband), version .

To locate your current firmware version, go to the stock, Samsung, dial pad and type in...

*#1234#

This will give you your, "Version", details in full, usually 3 lines of information, AP: CP: CSC:, which may all be relevant.

*** If code *#1234# has been disabled on your firmware, you can download and install, free from the Play Store, Phone Info and it will give you, under Firmware Info... PDA, Baseband, CSC, versions.

#3. Also helpful would be your carrier, (service provider), location, (UK, India, Russia, USA, etc: ), and if your phone is rooted or not and running a custom ROM, (give details).

Thanks. The above helps us to help you and hopefully someone will be able to reply to you shortly. :)

For more information, see, 35 Galaxy S5 models - know yours???

(TIP If you are a poster it is a good idea to mention your model number and firmware version in case this has a bearing on your problem.

Better still, if you have 25+ posts to your name, you can go to the black bar at the top of this forum and click on your
Username, which will show a drop down menu. Just select, "Signature", and you can enter in the signature box the details of your phone, i.e. - "Galaxy S5 G900F".This ensures that your device details are shown in every post you make. You can update this as often as you like and will help other users immediately identify your phone and firmware.)

You are on non stock Samsung firmware with Verizon. See #1.6 of 35 Galaxy S5 models - know yours??? As per page 16 of the Verizon S5 user manual for KitKat, the soft key to the left of the HOME button is now the, "Recent key", to bring up recent applications and long press for Home screen options.

Verizon has also disabled the Service, (sometimes called... Secret), codes on their firmware version.

Hi McGee10, welcome to Android forums.

As @ironass pointed out, it's very model/version specific. I suppose that's what you get when you have different hardware/feature sets all trying to use the same release of Android.

Just to give you an example, I have an unbranded Galaxy Note 10.1 on the same version of Android as your S5 from Verizon, rooted, but still stock and a long press of the menu key brings up search for me, while a long press of the home button brings up recent apps. It get's a little crazy when trying to teach people how to do something when all the buttons work differently. Of course some things do all work the same which makes it even more confusing when "A" works, but "B" doesn't.

So, I guess you can just keep asking your questions. We're happy to try to help, but don't hold it against anyone* if we get it wrong.

*Hold it against Samsung and Verizon for too many customizations and a lack of standards. ;)

Thanks anyhow. After reading backwards from page 85 to page 50 the question I had have mostly been answered. This is my first smart phone ever. Now I have had it 2 weeks and maybe not doing so bad after all. Thanks again I'll try not to be a pain.

Not a pain Mcgee10! We've all got to learn. The Verizon KitKat users manual is a good place to start... before Verizon force you up to Lollipop. The Search function is a good way to find things on the forum as usually, someone has asked the question before. Good luck with your phone!

Like I'm finding out just need to try and try again. I figured out how to get that menu working from the long hold. Now I feel pretty stupid.

One thing about all this is Standard: Verizon introduces more headaches for its' customers than any other ISP....

That's an official, undocumented, opinion from a VZW user.

My lollipop upgrade went off without any problems. I really think now because somethings work a little different with lollipop people are saying it's not working like it did in kitkat.

This forum is a great wealth of information on everything smartphone. I love it here. I read here almost everyday for a few hours. You guys keep up the good work.
