another noob with questions

im due for an upgrade here in about two weeks and im thinking of moving from the blackberry to a android phone. Anyways i have spend some time on here tonight just searching around and i dont know if i just missed it or what but what is kind of the general consencious on the moto droid vs the htc droid? the full physical qwerty keyboard doesnt really matter to me as i have had touch phones in the past so aside from that are there really any differences between the two? the other question i have is what version of the android OS does the HTC Eris come with now from verizon? is it the same as the moto droid or older? Are the cameras the same as far as the mega pixels go? Just thought of another question i see people talking about rooted and unrooted what does that mean? And is there an all in one IM program to download too i see meebo but i was looking for something that has AIM,MSN, and Facebook chat.

well... i think the moto droid has a better os/firm ware... i also think it has more memory... those questions along with the camera questions can all be answered by going to verizons website and clickin the compare phones box....
rooted from my understanding is having like super access to your phone. I know you can search root and itll pull up more than 1 post about it... as for a messenger program... i dont know of any that has fb chat other then the ipod touch or iphones fb app.... if anyone does, let me know!!!

However... Ive owned a blackberry pearl and a blackberry storm and my wife owned a blackberry curve... I think the android os is a lot funner than the BB os. I enjoy being able to easily navigate through different themes and custom icons.... so which ever droid you decide to go with, im sure youll like it. IMHO the Eris is a way better looking phone, but hey its not all about the looks, right? :-p

Best advice is to go into a Verizon store and play with both of them and see which one you like better.

There are significant differences between the two. 1) The Droid had Android 2.0 and the Eris has 1.5, 2) They have different processors, the Droid is quicker. 3) the Droid has a bigger screen. 4) Both Motorola and HTC have customized the OS giving a completely different user experience (This is where going and playing with the phones really helps.) The OS differences really aren't that important being that the Eris will be getting 2.1 some time this year, but will keep the HTC Sense UI. The cameras have the same megapixel rating(5.0).

Rooting in simple terms allows you to gain access to the OS to tweak it, open up some options, and allow you to put a different ROM(version of the OS) on your phone. This should not be done lightly. If you mess it up you can turn your phone into a brick and will have to replace it.

Meebo is an all in one, it has FB, AIM, MSN, GTalk, Yahoo, and a few others. There is also Nimbuzz and eBuddy. They are all energy hogs and will constantly check for incoming IMs. eBuddy has an option to delay incoming IMs and check periodically.

I think I got everything. Hope this helps.

do those meebo and nimbuzz programs us data then and not SMS for there instant messages? also i did some searching on this as well and im curious is there a better calender application for the phone as well? I will admit i dont care about it so much but my wife does and both of us coming from blackberry's she would like something like the bb one as she uses it alot for work.

Meebo, Nimbuzz, eBuddy, ect. do use data and not SMS. They are IM apps. I am using Pure Calendar Agenda for my calendar. I love it. It's a paid app. I will post a screen shot if you want to see it.

i am in this forum for a reason. "YES" im a noob. i admit it. im trying to find out linux is best to use for doing all of the nifty things that can be done with the android phones. i am currently using ubuntu 9.10 koala karmic. is this OS compatible with implementing all of the different things that i have seen on websites and in some of the forums on the net? i just started using linux. i dont have a windows anymore to force myself to learn it. hell i dont know how to wine on the damn thing yet! so any help would be greatly appreciated. thank you

Here is the screen shot. This is the 4x4 widget with the HTC skin. The widgets vary from 2x2 to 2x4, 3x2 to 3x4, and 4x1 to 4x4. There are various skins. Some of them are solid so you can't see your wallpaper to completely transparent where it looks like the text is on your wallpaper. There are some guys over at xda-developers that are making skins for this. I got it in the market. I don't remember how much it was. I think it was only a couple of dollars. Search for "pure calendar" in the market. It's called "pure calendar widget(agenda)" by Francois Deslandes.
