Help Another storage problem Galaxy Tab A 10

bigpygme

Lurker
Internal storage is in the 'red zone'. looks like there is only 11 GB left. i had to delete some apps and still get warnings.

how am i running out of space? and how to i solve the riddle ??

the largest Internal folder i can see (by the X-Plore app) is Root at 189 MB, with 11 GB free.
of that, 169 MB is taken by (external) SD card. so most of that 189 MB isn't in Internal storage.
right ?

App Manager takes 755MB.
i can't see the App Manager folder or Root Folder in other app managers or even when i plug the tablet into my computer. even though computer settings are Show hidden folders.

those are the largest folders i can see in Internal Storage. SD card has tons of space in it.
i don't know how to move those folders to it, tho. and i don't know if i can move the Root folder anyway.

help ? i am SO open to suggestions.

TY v much for your time and expertise.

Michael

thx for checking this post, Hadron.

My Files reports 15.8 of 16 GB is being used.
It had been less, but after plugging the tablet into the computer i was able to move three vid's to the SD card.
i haven't figured out how to do that just within the tablet.

I tried to take a screenshot as you asked, by palm swipe and by Home + Vol Down.
Nothing was saved to Gallery. Opening the Gallery, the message said "Some Gallery features may not work. You can free up storage space with My Files".
So as for your request, either neither method worked for getting a the screenshot, or it's saying it can't save anything to Gallery.

Agree that it seems like i ought to have some space to work with in internal memory, but it's acting like internal space/ memory is very tight or too tight.

Well if you only have 200 MB free then yes, I can quite understand it disabling screenshots. You won't be able to install any apps too. Android uses a lot of temporary files (caches) when running, so it has to keep some space free, and so if you look like completely running out it will disable features to try to stop the OS crashing.

So this makes sense where you are now, but it made no sense to be giving warnings when you still had 11GB free.

The problem is that you cannot see everything with X-Plore (or any file manager) unless you are rooted. Apps, app data, all of that lives in a different area that the file manager cannot access. I suggest starting by seeing whether any of your apps are using stupid amounts of space: go into your system Settings and find the Apps settings (which actually on a Samsung might be renamed "App Manager". Have a look at your apps and see how much space each is using. Most versions of Android let you sort apps by size, though sadly, in another case of Google's dumbing down, some of the latest do not (at least not on a Pixel - you might be luckier), but even if you can't you should be able to see their sizes from the list. If you see any especially large ones click on them and try clearing their caches or even their data (if you know they aren't storing anything important). Browsers can easily cache several hundred MB, as can social networking apps. And if you use any media apps (e.g. download TV shows to watch later) those downloads will be hidden from the file browser as part of the app's internal data (they don't want people to be able to just copy the downloads), and can add up to quite a lot of storage. Even podcasts can add up. In these cases deleting shows you've already watched will free up the space. If you see other sorts of apps using absurd amounts of space think about whether they should: it might be that they are misbehaving. But while clearing an app's cache is always safe, clearing its data need not be so should be approached with more care.

That's where I'd start anyway.
