Anti virus apps for android

Rhydian

Newbie
I'm used to using avg on my computer to protect me from malicious code and I haven't had to format my disk for several years so It must be doing something right.

But now with mobiles there seems to be two sides to anti virus protection 1. that you don't need it as long as you carefully choose the apps that you install 2. you do need it as hackers are now targeting android because of it's open nature to development.

So what apps if any do you use to protect you from potential threats?

I use Lookout which means I don't have to "research" any apps I want to download as it screens them for me.

It also doubles up as backing up my contacts and you can "find" your phone if you misplace it in the house.

They are worthless.
Not one has discovered malicious code.
The community has, but not the AV suites.

Seekdroid is 99 cents and has find the phone, remote wipe and lock et cetera.

I use Lookout as well. Really love it. It does an app scane, to your setting, and will let you know if there are any virsus or malware.

To give credit where credit is due, Lookout was claiming a few days ago that they (the company, not the app itself) had discovered and reported several instances of a modified DroidDream in the Market. The infected apps weren't anything that I'd normally touch with a ten foot pole though, so even if Lookout were the first to update their anti-malware definitions, I still don't feel inclined to install it.

It's nice to see someone who knows what AVG is :D I have AVG on my laptop & desktop for anti-virus & I put AVG Mobilation on my Droid X (free version on all my devices).

After it's downloaded to the phone you can click >Open AVG >Menu >Tools to choose (1) Data Backup (Beta) and (2) App Backup to backup your "stuff".

- AVG can be set (>open AVG >Menu >settings) to "Real-time scanner" "Scan Text Message" "Safe Web Surfing" "Update Frequency" and "Update Now"

- There is Data Backup (Beta) and App Backup -- >Open AVG >Menu >Tools

This app also scans all downloads from the market to avoid virus, spam & malware. As a "seasoned" AVG user for 10+ years, I think it's great! No virus to date on my computers (knocks on wood) :p

I just downloaded it, looking forward to seeing effectiveness of Data and App Backup! Wonder how long it will be until a full version is released?

I have also used AVG on my PC for years and did not mind loading it up on my Android (as long as it was free, did not take up room or slow things down) for the (false) sense of security. One feature that I wanted was the phone locator. Unfortunately, AVG's phone locator did not work for me (running 2.1; it did work under 2.3.3 but unfortunately that version of Android was buggy for me and I went back to 2.1). I now use Zoner which has both the phone locator and antivirus.

+1 for Zoner. I have it, but do believe I'd never get a virus since I only download "safe" apps, but who knows... with all the countries putting out apps... if there's a way to contaminate your phone, "someone" will find a way... odds are AV won't catch it right away. I use it mainly for phone locator.

Haven't put it on my Galaxy Player yet, I assume it works on wifi stuff too. SMS through GV.

edit: Just tried Zoner, location doesn't work without cell radio.
