Help Antivirus/Firewall

I currently use Avast and tried to activate the firewall. I could not activate the firewall because Avast requires root to do so. Do all antivirus apps require root for the firewall to work?

If you search for firewall apps in the Play Store you will find some which say they can work without root. I've not tried any (I am rooted), so can't make a recommendation.
