Antivirus software for Andrioid out now for $4.99

SMobile Systems has released VirusGuard, the first antivirus software for the Android OS which allows users to scan their devices and memory cards for viruses, spyware and other malware.
Here’s what Neil Book, president of SMobile Systems had to say about the Android platform and VirusGuard:
“Android’s open-source architecture is fantastic because it allows anyone to develop new applications for the phones running on this system. For SMobile, we believe that creating a virus protection solution is necessary to help thwart the potential for malware attacks that are coming and those that exist today,”
“It is our mission to keep users informed of threats we detect and to protect consumer and business users from the very real dangers that await a potentially exploitable device like the new G1.”
Over the coming weeks and months SMobile plans on adapting the remainder of their SecurityShield suite to the Android platform, which will offer a firewall, anti-spam and backup features. Also planned are parental controls that will allow parents to closely monitor their child’s cell phone voice and messaging activities to ensure their child’s safety.
VirusGuard is now available for $4.99 from SMobile Systems and Handango with a planned release for the Android Market Place in the 1st Quarter of 2009 when the payment system is in place.

i personally would not buy it. for anyone who is familiar with linux systems, viruses are almost non existent.

I also would not buy it because of what you said, but also.....

Anti-Virus does almost nothing these days. Most viruses target your AntiVirus software first anyway.
The AV software that's out there RARELY if ever stops the software, and the most it's able to do these days seems to be to tell you that you have a virus. Doesn't do so well with removing, just tells you "hey, look, a virus". A good deal of the time, it doesn't find it at all, those viruses that don't attack the AV software merely make a few adjustments so that they're invisible to detection.

The worst part of any security system is the end user. Doesn't matter how much AV software you have if the end user is downloading crap and going to crazy websites.

1. Don't download everything off the web. Much of it is junk, the rest is spyware, malware, free trials with nagware, or a virus. Only download from a website you trust.

2. Think before you click! Not all links take you where they say you're going.

3. If you're not sure, just don't do it.

4. If you can't help yourself from visiting strange websites and downloading whatever you find there -- then at least pick a computer, make it your junk computer, and only do that there. Never do that on your phone.

There, I just save you 5 bucks.

Besides everything should be running in its own protected environment, in order for a virus to be able to do anything you would be prompted to let it have access to other parts of the system. At that point its just good judgment.

Virus aren't impossible, but would have to be exploiting a huge security hole, which would obviously be fixed quickly - RC29 update anyone? ;)

I bought the $19.99 software based on Kim Komando article recommending it. What a waste! This is another example of software not ready to be released but was anyway.

1) The software is not from the 'Market" so there was an error for that & I had to remove some security to allow the install.
2) The registration number is a combo of letters & numbers. However, the lower case 'L' looks just like a number '1'.
3) Upon successful install one of the modules is 'disabled'. To enable it I need to 'update my profile'. I can't find any 'profile' to update. Of course, customer support has bankers hours (Mon to Fri 9 to 5:30).
4) I've been at this on and off for over a week. Who knows if the the software is any good - it won't install.

I would NOT recommend this to anyone else to purchase. Wait a bit & someone will offer one through the market that installs quickly, accurately, & has good customer support.
