Even old ones tend to have multi layer boards so soldering to power points can be tricky if they are internal. Ports tend to have larger pins coming out of the board so you can tack on a tiny wire without heating and desoldering the internal layer connection. Just look up USB port pinouts then flip the laptop board over and see where the pins come through then apply a little bit of heat wrap a tiny wire around the bit of pin thats sticking out. Tiny wire for wire wrapping works well here.
