Apps Any Alternative for Google Places and Directions API??

Hi,

I am trying to develop a POI search application using google maps. But according to Google Terns, the app has to be publicly available without charge.

Can I use something else instead of using google APIs which can solve the purpose and also be freely available?
All suggestions/pointers are welcome
