I understand Skype is not available for Android. But does anyone know any application like Skype my gf and I can use to call each other without phone charges?

I'm pretty sure they are exclusive with Verizon for the time being... Can't wait for that agreement to expire! There's no way in hell I will go to Verizon (unless they lowered their rates to Sprint prices... but that's not going to happen).
