Any way to get a black or dark background back on the text app?

I think my text app changed from the darker color to white with the update to 4.4.2. Is there any way to get this back to a darker color? My phone is not rooted.

I have read that Nova launcher may do it. Not sure though.

If I install something like chomp sms, will I need to uninstall the factory installed text app? Seems like I tried one of these one time before and I was getting some texts on my factory app and then some on the new third party app.

When you start the app it will ask you if you want to set it as your default. It will not require you to uninstall the pre-installed app.
