Root Any Way to Root?

dumbledork

Lurker
Seriously enjoying this phone, and for the price I can't complain. That being said, has anyone, by any chance, figured out or stumbled upon a way to root this phone? I know it's only a little over a month old and I may be jumping the gun by asking so soon, but I'm really craving the rooted experience again and it's been an adjustment to go without! I'm not even going to attempt to tamper with it myself for fear that I'll brick it.

Hello and welcome to the forums . testing is in the works it maybe one very soon . unless you have the answer that can save us all .:D:what: just a few laughs.

We should have a drive to appeal to developers, Avant has very software execution, no lag or less lag than stock S4. Except camera, i put Avant on top of S4.

How to root Samsung Galaxy Avant SM-G386T

Worked for me.Rooted in a couple of minutes.

Does anybody know if this will work on the MetroPCS Galaxy Avant sm-g386t1

[edit] I contacted Samsung Support and the person that I spoke with told me that the stock firmware for the T-Mobile Avant (SM-G386T) and the MetroPCS Avant(SM-G386T1) are both identical other than what apps are pre-loaded on the phone. I have now successfully rooted my MetroPCS Samsung Galaxy Avant SM-G386T1 using the root method in the OP. Hopefully someone can build a custom recovery for this device soon. It would be awesome to have cwm or twrp for this phone.

Talk to the official unloved devices hit squad. They are in the Android development > developers forum. Give em some info from the phone and they might be able to help come up with a recovery. Shabbypenguin and several other developers hang out there.

Could someone who has a T-Mobile avant upload a zipped copy of the system/media folder? I really dislike the MetroPCS boot animation. And I'd like to see if there are any other different sounds/tones on the T-Mobile avant. Ty
[Edit] Never mind got custom boot animations working.

I'm liking this phone so far. For it from metro PCs. Is there a recovery rlfor the T-Mobile version out or just the root method for now?

I went where you said but I have no idea how to provide the info they want.

I was having trouble getting adb running on my pc but i got all the info they ask for now. Btw getting the adt bundle working on windows 8.1 is a huge pain.

I would hazard a guess that the Avant is similar enough to other Samsung phones that Shabby and others with the Unloved Devices Hitsquad will be able to make you a recovery. They made one for the Galaxy Light as well. I'm interested in this, 'cause I'm highly thinking of getting one for my wife before her LG Motion dies and CDMA goes away on Metro. I don't know if she'll let me root/custom recovery the phone, but at least it'll be there.

It might take a while though. This device doesnt have a very large following yet since it has only been out for a couple months and MetroPCS has only had it less than two weeks. Maybe it would help if more people chime in on the request thread?

Hi and welcome aboard, i would start with towelroot by geohot if you haven't already, here's the link for drivers for testing other root methods http://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-12660#drivers

Towelroot wont work. Neither will any of the other 1 click root apks. With that said a working root method has already been given in post #4 on this thread.

I used the cf auto root and its working. Just need a quick dirty method to figure out to pull the system files. So we can have some type of restore.

Although the Avant is basically replacing the Light at T-Mo they're actually quite different phones, despite other similarities. The Light has a Samsung Exynos processor, while the Avant has a Snapdragon 400, which means dissimilar kernels. More importantly, the Light does not have KNOX and the bootloader is unlocked, while the Avant does have KNOX and the bootloader is locked. Chainfire was able to root the Avant because his Auto-Root uses an exploit through Odin, which bypasses a locked bootloader. But without an unlocked bootloader, custom recovery is not possible.

Someone has to either figure out how to unlock the Avant's bootloader (and if nobody's figured out how to unlock the bootloader on the Verizon and AT&T GS5 and Note 3/4, that's extremely unlikely to happen), or someone has to make a safestrap recovery. Until that time, you'll be stuck with what you've got with root, and maybe some debloated/optimized stock ROMs, like Hyperdrive for the Note 3 or LightWave for the T399 Light.

While not a nandroid backup, you can always use Odin to re-flash the stock firmware.
