Anyone ever pre-order a cell phone??

As we all know the htc evo 3d is coming this summer..I would like to pre-order it and have never done this before..The option isnt available yet obviously..But how does this work? Do i have to put money down or something? Like a deposit and...Also the phone is held for me right?? Once i pre-order? Thanks for any info in advance..
 
I've pre-ordered iPhones. They basically would just hold it on launch day for 24 hours (until the store closes for the day). Not sure if this will be the same for EVO's, but I suspect it will be similar.
 
Are pre-orders only reserved for sprint customers getting an upgrade or new customers..I am going to be buying the evo 3d outright at full price and wanted to know if i would still be able to pre order it??

I've preordered phones thru sprint that I have bought outright. Worked just as it has when I've preordered phones with a renewl.

the way its done now is you buy a sprint $50 gift card and then you are put on the device wait list (you can use the $50 gift card towards the purchase of the device)
 
different stores have different pre-order policies. i pre-ordered my epic last august as an upgrade at an official sprint store. filled out an on-line form and was emailed/called to come pick it up on release date. no deposit needed.
 
Pre-ordering phones works pretty well if you need the latest and greatest on launch day. FYI Best Buy is taking pre-orders in-store only and you have to specifically ask for it.
 
I pre-ordered my Epic through Radio Shack. Same as described above...you "buy" a $50 Radio Shack gift card, and they put you on the list. They called me first thing the morning the phones arrived to tell me when to pick mine up.
