Anyone know wtf happened to my phone LOL

Lurker
I have an eris and last night I noticed it had 0 bars in my house where it usually has 2 or 3...no biggie ...I reboot it...upon rebooting...I get 4-5 force close messages for google apps and maybe some other third party apps too cant rem

so I just said screw it and did a factory reset

it worked but still pisses me off that this happened less than 24 hours before my vacation and i had to reinstall all the apps...thank god my phonebook was intact though

anyone have any clue wtf happened to my phone or why

The signal could have just been a problem your carrier was having as I don't believe apps have permission to control your signal strengh.

Maybe you had previously downloaded or updated a new app on the market causing the force closures :)

You hit the 70 app limit. I have an HTC Hero, which is the same thing as the Eris. Same thing happened to me. If it happens again, just uninstall a couple apps to get below the 70 app limit. The word is that this will be fixed with the 2.1 update.

I have 96 apps installed, no problems here??

my eris kept loosing signal and dropping calls. Verizon said the handset was bad and the service was fine, so after 2 weeks of having the phone the gave me a new one. The new one seems to be better, but it was frustrating after 2 weeks then i lost all my contacts info as well during the switch.

:O I did not know there was a restiction on the number of Apps?

I have over 100 apps installed. However, I too have seen the problem of force closes on reboot sometimes. Like others have said, you just have to uninstall some of your latest apps. When this happens to me, I go through my apps and uninstall apps that I don't ever use anymore.

I don't think it's a number-of-apps problem really. During boot, a lot of programs are starting up, competing for processor time and memory allocations. Android's process manager force closes any apps that are unresponsive within a few seconds and I think that this is mostly what's going on. It's not that any app is that badly written, but there's just a lot going on at boot. Also, the more apps you have installed, the less memory there is for allocations for these app's startup code which would cause more garbage collection to-be needed which could then slow down the apps and make then hit the time limit for a force close.

The fix for 2.1 is probably better process startup code at boot so that not too many apps get started at once.

Just letting you know, there IS a 70 app limit on the HERO. The Eris is the exact same phone, so I would only assume there is a limit as well...

Those of you who have more than 70 apps, are you rooted or stock? Maybe the Eris limit is 100 apps?? IDK...

@bluenova

Judging from the fact that you said "rubbish", you have a GSM Hero. That is a lot different from the CDMA one. The CDMA Hero has a 70 app limit. IDK about the GSM. Soooo, that solves that discrepancy...

Ah ok thanks. There was no mention of radio type in previous posts unless I missed it.

I guess I just assumed the limit was across all versions of the Hero, as well as it's clones... But maybe it's just a Sprint limitation?? :rolleyes:

The Sprint Hero is running OS 1.5 (as is the Eris). I believe that GSM Heroes are on 1.6.

I have over 100 apps installed. I've sometimes gotten the force close issue at boot. I then uninstall some apps, but never have to remove very many.

I have a CDMA Sprint Hero, unrooted. So no, there is not a 70 app limit (at least not on mine).

You are the exception then, because this is a well-documented issue.

Yep...

@tdieckman

Are you saying you have 100 apps including built-in Sense/Android apps? I think maybe the 70 app limit pertains to market-type apps (maybe?? -- just speculation).

Ok, just shy of 70 non-preinstalled apps, so I guess I am seeing the same 70 app limit.
