Anyone tried Bitcoin mining?

Just out of interest, I read a little bit about Bitcoins, as I can't say I really know much about it. Anyway I wondered how you go about collecting Bitcoins, and if you could make any money out of it. The simple answer seems to be, not any more, as mining the coins has become harder, and you need specialised expensive hardware to do it. I think if you got into it in the early days and amassed a lot of coins, you would be sitting on a fortune now.
Just interested if anyone else tried doing it, and how you got on with it?

I usually just send out some ransomeware and let the botcoins come rolling in.

Seriously, while I understand Bitcoin, and that there may be legitimate and beneficial reasons to have this kind of monetary exchange, it's always seemed just a bit too shady for my tastes.

Has become kind of tainted hasn't it, with ransomware demanding payment in the currency.

It reminds me of torrents ... once a very useful paradigm, now it's the land of pirates. Shame really.
