App compatibility errors

I've noticed in the play store that there are some apps that say they are compatible with my phone but they force close upon opening and there are some that say they aren't but really are. Is there any definitive way to determine if an app is compatible with my phone before installing?

Google play is only supposed to show you what you can run, based on how the dev sets up the app. If it requires a Tegra chip, then only those devices are supposed to see it. I think it's up to the dev to set it up properly with Google Play, so outside of reading reviews of the apps for "this device type only", there's not much you can do but let the dev know if it's not functional upon installation.

Or some times the force close can just be "android" doing its thing. Many apps I have run superbly sometimes and then at other times just "force close". However as RyanB said, the best thing is to read reviews, check out the ratings etc.
