App for Media streaming from PC.

Greetings everyone, I got a challenge for you...

So here is the subject: In my PC I have a music folder with 250 GB. Hence all the videos/movies... And most of the day I'm away from my home.
In my 2.1 android xperia x8 I only have the 16 GB sd card, so it's kinda obvious that I desperately need a way to connect with my PC while I'm away. I tried audiogalaxy and some other apps but didn't work proper... So can you come up with any way to steam media files from my pc while I'm away, and while PC is off? ( cause I can't really leave it open while I'm sleeping away or while I'm on vacation...)

And furthermore, if there is a way to run applications straight from SD card without having android 2.2?

Thanks in advance and any help would me much appreciated!

No. When your PC is off it is OFF.

( cause I can't really leave it open while I'm sleeping away or while I'm on vacation...)

Yes you can. If you use a password-protected screensaver and configure your PC's settings so that it doesn't go to sleep your PC can be on standby 24/7 and you can run AudioGalaxy as long as you like.
And when you have your home PC configured like that you can access it and work on it remotely from any smartphone, tablet, PC, or Mac, using e.g. Teamviewer, too.

If you don't want to leave your PC on all the time but you do want access to your 250GB media files you will have to get a cloud account to store it on. And pay for it.

And furthermore, if there is a way to run applications straight from SD card without having android 2.2?

If your PC has an SD card slot you ought to be able to read it that way. Under the PC's OS. But Android apps require Android OS to run.

Thank you for your response OsiriZ.

Well, even if I have the proper settings I doubt that having my pc on all that time would be a good idea.. Though I am searching for a cloud server at the moment (without having any luck tbh) to accomplish it, I don't really mind if I pay - I have a large music file and I NEED to listen to it ;).
And about the second subject I don't really I get you :o, I was seeking to run applications straight from SD from.. my mobile.. But if you meant it that way then its my stupidity xP. Thank you for your help once again!

Wrong. Computers are made to run 24/7, 365 days a year.
If they weren't you wouldn't for instance have electric light 24/7, 365 days a year. But you do. Because the grid computers run 24/7, 365 days a year.

So your computer can run 24/7, 365 days a year too. It was designed for it.
Just start up Teamviewer on it before you leave home.

If money is no object I would get a new Apple Macintosh with the new OS: Lion. Because that includes a free, limitless, iCloud account. It is limitless

An alternative would be Google Music Beta. I doubt you could get all of your songs onto it, but 20000 song limit is a pretty sick number of songs they allow you to have.

Usually takes two weeks to get an invite, unless a friend invites you. I think I have some, if you want to try it.

What Google Music Beta does is lets you upload a number of songs (last I checked, the limit was 20k) to their server and you stream the music from there. It's a pretty nifty thing, IMO.

But you will have to upload that 250GB of media files to the cloud FIRST in order to be able to stream them down!

On an average upload connection that will take something like 2 to 4 MONTHS of uninterrupted 24/7 uploading...

Eh?

I uploaded my 30 GB collection in about 3 to 5 days (I don't remember exactly how long, it wasn't bad, though) with interruptions in the evening. So, if he gets a similar rate, that'd be a month and a half. So it'd take maybe 2 months at that rate. Also, you wouldn't be able to upload that entire amount, anyways. The 30 GB or so worth of songs I have is 5k songs. So only about half of that would be accepted on GMB. Even so, you wouldn't have to leave the machine on once the songs are uploaded.

So either he'd have to leave his machine on 24/7, or go on an uploading binge for awhile but then be able to turn off his machine. I'm just giving the guy options. Personally, I like GMB. I tried AudioGalaxy and I didn't like it. GMB was just easier for me.

Uploading 250GB at 2,000kbps takes 68 days of 24/7 uploading. Times 2 IRL.

That is why e.g. CrashPlan (Online Data Backup & Storage – CrashPlan – Backup Software, Disaster Recovery) doesn't work IRL. Average connection speeds are still a hundred times too slow to make it a viable proposition for Joe Blow, Jane Doe, and auntie Meredith.
I tried CrashPlan. I signed up and started to upload about 180GB data to serve as a backup to one particular machine. But when CrashPlan had finally, after hours, indexed my upload it turned out it would take 7 weeks, 24/7!
I killed it right there.

Another option would be to build/buy your own server or NAS. It takes some work to get everything working, but it's worth it in my opinion.

Currently I have a linux box with subsonic setup to stream all my music and video. It works really well.

There are also NAS out there that have streaming capabilities. All you have to do is attach it to your router and do so some network configurations.

Thanks for sharing this with us friend..being a Mac user I didn't know that I can enjoy free unlimited storage..Thanks for it.:)

You may want to create an alias for that Mobile Documents folder (select > Command L) and drag it to your desktop for easy access, ashish.
