Help App installed by itself on home screen

Lurker
Today I noticed something very weird in my phone. In the home screen, there was an app called "Aqua Mail", which I had never head about. I looked into the "My Apps" tab in Google Play and couldn't find it. Then, I just removed the app (I didn't open it), but when I held it to remove it, it didn't show the red X in the top right corner, so I just dragged it to the "remove from home screen" area. Then, looking at the installed apps and searching for aqua mail, I found no results.

Does anyone have any idea what it might be? Some kind of malware? Thanks.

AquaMail is a reputable app - many of us use it as our main email client. So it's odd to hear that name associated with an unexpected icon.

As for the removal behaviour, that depends on what launcher you are using. So without that information (or, if you don't know what that means, what manufacture, since they all have their own) I couldn't comment on that anyway.

Your carrier may have added it as bloatware, particularly if you just got an OTA update. Bloatware can't be removed... but in newer versions of Android, it can be disabled.

Do you have "File Commander" or "OfficeSuite" installed? Basycally any program by MobiSystems? Because i have those two programs installed and today also AquaMail icon showed up on my homescreen. This is probably some very annoying advertisement.

It's a Sony Z5 Compact, and I didn't install any custom launcher.

Yes, I do have them (came preinstalled) and they show me a lot of advertisement. It makes sense...

I figured it out! The app didn't show up in the list of installed apps for me. So I looked high and low: if you hold on to the app (until it's in the mode that it can be moved) and then click on it.

For me, it had the Office Suite icon when I did that. I clicked on the "i" and it took me to the Office Suite app window. Once I uninstalled it, Aqua Mail also disappeared.

TL;DR: kick officesuite to the curb.

The Aquamail icon appeared on my home screen today as well. Nothing in Application Manager or on the play store listing.
LG V20 Verizon. I haven't received any over the air updates recently. I do have the free version of Office Suite installed.

Update:Never clicked the icon. Uninstalled Office Suite and the Aquamail icon disappeared

Same happened to me.. Looking on another forum it will have been put there by Office Suite or another MobiSystems app. Nothing to worry about.

This just happened to me after waking from a nap, I was getting rid of all the notifications on my phone and apps I had left open before sleep (my alarm clock, gmail, chrome and facebook) and then it did the little animation for AquaMail being installed on my home page. Like others, I didn't install it (at least not to my knowledge,I do tend to do pretty specific things while "sleepwalking" though), so I googled it and I'm glad I wasn't the only one, so Hi to the forum too. Like others, it also was not in my app history on the play store.

I removed it and thanks for the tip to the person saying get rid of officesuite too.

This really is odd news. I used AquaMail for a few years. It really is the most powerfuln Android mail client I have found. I haven't noticed any odd behaviour, or found announcements from the developer.

There is an official support forum

You guys could start asking questions; I would if I were you.

I have noticed something that may be relevant: Aquamail has been sold to a company called MobiSystems. The original developer is still associated in some capacity (or was a month or two ago) but us no longer the owner.

So these things may be related to that change. If so, not a good sign.

Yeah, Hadron is correct and Mobi Systems also owns Office Suite. Appears they are trying to push the use of AquaMail. I will say that I've used AquaMail for some time and find it to be a great app! We shall see if that continues under the new ownership.

Think Mobi Systems site is offline at the moment.

"Fatal error: Uncaught exception 'Exception' with message 'Error getting data from DeviceAtlas Cloud end-point "region1.deviceatlascloud.com" Reason: Forbidden: Invalid licence key ' in /var/www/mobisystems.com/mobi/lib/DeviceAtlasCloudClient.php:389 Stack trace: #0"

Invalid licence key... Didn't they pay a bill or something?

Typical of a company that aquires a product, and has no sense of ownership beyond the potential profit.
