Help "App not found" for only applications in folders and on SD card

Timewarp

Newbie
I rebooted my Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge this morning, however, upon restart any applications that are on the SD card and in a folder get the message "App Not Found" when trying to launch. These apps also have the grey SD card icon.

Moving the app out into the root tray allows the application to launch. However, moving the app to internal storage doesn't.

Uninstalling and reinstalling an app doesn't help. Neither does clearing system cache.

Is there a fix for this? The workaround is to move all apps out of folders, but this means I can't organise them as well.

Moving to SD makes a difference to how an app is stored and loaded. But moving to folders doesn't change anything about the app: a folder is just a feature of the launcher app. So this is a really weird bug.

What happens if you use a third party launcher (e.g. Nova) and move the app into a folder in that? I'm guessing that it will work normally, in which case the problem will be something to do with the Samsung launcher. That would also offer a workaround, but if you want to keep using the Samsung launcher it might help if you can tell people what android version you are using.

Apps moved to SD are different, and I've seen some other reports in other threads of them not loading properly in recent Samsung phones after an OS update (but not all phones, of course, so my guess is that some timing in the boot sequence is a bit marginal and some phones aren't loading properly - but that's just my best guess).

Hmm:thinking: I had that issue before but it was only on a Windows 10 OS phone but never on Android OS . The grayed out apps are the residuals left behind from the apps moved from it's current location. The fix I did was to delete all the residuals then restart the device and try reinstalling the missing apps. Now mind you this worked on a totally different operating system and may not work with yours.

Thanks for the replies.

Sorry forgot to say Oreo. Yes there does seem to be a weird timing thing on Samsungs where the SD card is reported to apps as not existing (rather than mount pending) and I had tonnes of trouble with Spotify filling internal storage after a reboot even though it was set to SD.

Anyway, I've managed to solve it. In case anyone else has this:
- settings
- apps
- Samsung experience home
- force stop
