App request: Wii-mote

What are the chances of someone creating (or being able to) an app that allows the G1 to be used as controller for the Wii?

I ask knowing next to nothing about the programming, but figure if it can be used as a remote for a desktop, this may be along the same lines....
 
The Wii-mote has a little camera in the front that takes pictures of the light bar and uses that to determine where it's facing in relation to the tv. While the G1 has a compass and GPS and could sort of do the same thing using them, the results wouldn't be very good.

You could do a good job of it if you played from the exact same place every time and told the G1 where your tv is in relation to that spot.
 
the wiimote has a little ir cam in the front that looks at the 2 leds in the sensor bar to tell the wimote its position in relation to the tv...

im not sure the g1 could pull it off due to hardware limitations, but hey wtf do i know

Other then the IR sensor the G1 has everything else, bluetooth, accelerometer. But it also has a touch screen, camera, and large storage device.

There could be a possible wii like games for use on consoles or computers.
 
Makes sense. I never realized the Wiimote was a camera..I thought it was, instead, transmitting a signal to the sensor bar.
I think it's the other way around: the sensor bar transmits an IR signal to the remote (I'm positive it's IR - not a little "camera" in the traditional sense of the word), which then transmits that data to the Wii via Bluetooth. I could be wrong, but I believe I read this somewhere a few months ago.

Correct, the sensor bar is nothing more than two spaced IR LEDs. the wiimote uses an IR cam to measure distance from the bar (based on the relative separation of the LEDs) and pointing direction. as far as i know the 6 degrees of movement (pitch, yaw, roll, forward/back, left/right, and up/down) are measured by the accelerometer. im not sure whether or not the camera or accelerometer in the wiimote is used for things such as roll, or maybe its a combination.
 
now that i think about it... with the bluetooth and accel, the only thing that you wouldnt be able to do wiimote-style would be pointing. im sure you could dupe the wii into thinking that your finger on the touchscreen was controlling the pointing. this of course would limit a good number of games, youd still be perfectly fine for games that only use pointing for menu navigation. itd be just like using a graphics tablet for a pc.

im no developer, so i dont know if its actually possible, but it seems like its feesable, with some workarounds
 
the camera may see the ir lights. My digital camera was a able to see the IR lights on the wii. Maby it can track it that way.

you're absolutely right, i had completely forgotten that my old camera phone could detect ir lights, i just tested the G1, and it does also. webcams can see it also, the only problem is that you need a filter on the lense so that it doesnt try to track visible light sources, you want it to only see IR
