App that limits data when roaming?

Hi all i am new to android. I rec my desire s tomorrow and i'd like to know if there is an app that turns off all data send and rec functions on the phone except for certain apps?

Basically id like to only have whatsapp and email running...nothing else so i minimize my data usage abroad. Also it would be great that if upon activating the app it turns the email to minimal meaning the phone only downloads headers instead of the full msg and pics.

Thank you in advance

Not exactly what I was looking for... I want to be able to monitor every byte which gets transferred via 3G. There are apps which run in the background downloading data which can cost a significant amount of money when roaming.

I'd like to turn all of the background data off -but still allow access for apps which I want to download data: email and whatsapp would be the primary ones.

Look forward to hearing from you

If you go to notifications and open networks and wireless. you will see regular wifi and under it wifi settings. At the bottom of the page is controls for mobile networks, between the 2 you can leave on the regular wifi and disable it for roaming and other settings.
Good luck

I personally block data roaming (way to expensive) and just use wifi when I need to get online. I don't know of an app which would allow you to allow specific apps to go online while roaming but that means that app becomes in control of data roaming. If app crashes or closes you could get data fees since the other apps would now be allowed online.

This is something i would be interested in as well. Ive posted the same question in the Tasker profile thread as well, so you can keep an eye on that thread too in case anyone replies.

I would not recommend using an app to do this. I've had a couple of bill time surprises my first month when I was new to android due to an app not working properly at times. Now I keep all of my roaming options turned off directly in the android settings. It's a few extra taps of your finger to turn it back on to just check email, and you only have to do it when traveling out of country so I don't see it as a big deal.

Yes, but its so much cooler when it happens automatically isn't it? :)
Also, the original poster wants his whatsapp to work, which means it needs to bbe on constantly to be able to receive messages.

in that case he'll have to use one of the above suggested apps. If it was me, I'd simply abandon the idea of whatsapp being on constantly or I'd be biting my nails hoping my tasking app doesn't fail me, but getting bitten by the ISP has made me a little phobic with my data lol.

Yeah I agree with this assesment, but just figured I'd drop him an actual app suggestion. Apps are generally unreliable.

Though DroidWall or similar would work pretty reliably but requires root.
