App to copy files from PC to Android via LAN

Hi there,

I have an Android device with LAN and an USB-HDD (XTreamer Prodigy). I want to copy (large!) files from PC (Win8) to the USB-HDD using LAN (not WLAN or WiFi!). All apps I found work only with WiFi or USB.

Is there any app working over LAN where I can upload from PC to Android (not download from Android to PC)?

Ummm. FYI - LAN (Local Area Network) just describes the fact that a bunch of computing devices are on the same network, usually in close proximity. The networking technology, wired or wifi, isn't relevent. Saying that, the prodigy apparently has a Gigabit ethernet port, what's the problem with using that and 'drag and drop' from the PC? The phone won't come into it.

Yes it has "GB"-Ethernet (and IS the Android device I'm talking about), and in the previous version it was possible to map the Prodigy-HDD as drive in Windows Explorer over wired network. This is not supported on Prodigy 4K anymore. I can see my PC from XTreamer, but the other way is not possible. As mentioned, I have no WiFi by now, so I want to use the wired GB-Network (what else is it for?), but no app seems to support this, they all require activated WiFi.

All in all the 4K-UI is a real pain, but that's another story ;)

So - to be more precise (thanks for the hint) - I'm searching for an Android-App that uses a wired network connection instead of WiFi to upload files from PC to XTreamer directly (or per FTP or even by scheduled polling from an specific PC-folder).

Same question here - possible solution (not very comfortable, but works at least): Start ES File Manager APP -> start "Remote Manager" inside ES and use FTP to transfer files to the internal drive.

AS has been noted ... avoid doing anything with ES where you provide an account and password. They end up in the home office in China.

Hey you can get an android app called shareit from the google play. You can transfer files and apps vice versa in your pc and android. Very fast, unlike bluetooth.

Hope this helps. ;)

If your device is not rooted, you can run an FTP server on it. There are many available in the Play Store. I'm not sure if any of them refuse to work over Ethernet. That would surprise me a bit. Some of them can be made to start-up automatically at device-boot.

If your device is rooted, you can run a Samba (a.k.a SMB) server (not client) on it, so that it appears to be just another file share on a Windows network, thereby making it less clunky to use than FTP. There are a few available in the Play Store. Again, I'd be surprised if any of them refuse to work over Ethernet. Some of them can be made to start-up automatically at device-boot.

In either case, if you find one that you like, you can use an automation app, like Llama, to automatically start it, if you like, and if such functionality isn't built into the app.

Please let us know what you decide. I'm probably going to install a device like that myself soon.

Another option would be to install TeamViewer Host (or perhaps TeamViewer QuickSupport) on the device and TeamViewer on the PC. That would not only allow file transfer from the PC to the device (and vice-versa) but it would also allow remote control of that device from the PC.

That got my attention. Where has this been reported?

I had been using ES File Explorer for years until recently learning that it's a security risk, in that your information and cloud-storage logins could possibly be available to the Chinese government. I then tried a few other free file managers; Astro, Total Commander, and X-plore.

X-plore is my favorite. It's free with no ads. It has all of the functionality that I used in ES File Explore (file management, cloud account access, LAN server access ) and then some (disk map, zip/unzip, multi-pane). Astro was good too but it's ad-supported and I kept accidentally hitting the ads. I found Total commander too clunky/difficult to use-- especially for LAN access.

I used to use ES Pro and it was my favorite.

It has been pointed out a lot everywhere in Android Forums that it is unsafe for cloud access. Your usernames and passwords for cloud access are sent from your device to the ES home office in China to do with as they see fit.

I now use X-plore for everything.

Well there's no root required, and it doesn't need to be online, just a straight Bluetooth file transfer. There was another expat wanted the same Chinese satnav app I was using, 高德, but couldn't find it on Google Play on his device, which was a Verizon Moto unlocked something or other.

Solid Explorer is an good option. I use it to move files between my NAS and my Android Devices over my WiFi network.

ES > app list > hold down on the app you want to transfer > more > send. :thumbsupdroid:

For Bluetooth the phones must be paired. We wanted to transfer Autonavi from my phone to a friend's phone. A GPS app that works in English, and we couldn't find it otherwise, all others are in Chinese only. Took a while because it also transferred about 1GB of cached PRC map data via BT.

I downloaded it direct from ES website. www.estrongs.com/?lang=cn

Have the app you want selected > more > send from the menu.
