App to send and receive free text messages?

i do not have a text plan. Are there any apps to send and receive texts for free?

The only thing I know of is Google Voice. If you install the GV app you can use it to send / receive text messages using data instead of your cell provider's text messages. People would have to SMS to your GV number instead of your regular cell phone number. Not sure if that is an issue or not for you....

Try textPlus. Free app, free registration, free texts to and from.
Only downfall is that Sprint users need to enable the short source texting.
