I don't know much about the old Windows situation. I do know that years ago while the G1 was being released and OpenMoko was being discussed, a friend of mine on vacation accessed my home wifi, made a free Skype call to China and opened a Windows document on his phone.

Two and a half years ago we had threads here left and right complaining about what Android wouldn't do yet that Windows devices could.

I understand that it left a lot to be desired and why it failed.

But it seemed decent to me at the time, providing decent capabilities.

Whether BB or Symbian were better or not isn't much the point, I think, because it did take Android a bit of time to surpass Windows in market share.

And in the US, the government just cracked the encryption through brute force and/or monitored the data while it was unprotected.

I would have thought the US Govt. and their agencies would have had backdoor access to BlackBerry anyway, without having to brute force and crack it. Probably part of the conditions and laws of doing business there, especially in this post 9/11 era. I'm sure the US Govt. has a backdoor into user's private data on Google and Microsoft.

It's like that here in China. If a company wants to have a presence here and not be blocked, they have to allow CPC government access and abide by the rules and laws. That's so often why Google is censored, and Microsoft and Yahoo are not.

BTW I don't think you can even use a BlackBerry phone here now, apart from making phone calls. AFAIK because RiM no longer has a presence or services in the PRC.
