apple spamming thousands due to huge flaw in iOS

disclaimer: i did write the article - but it's still a HUGE issue. i got literally 50-some texts within a half hour...

it appears that if ANY ios user adds you to a group message, you're at the mercy of the rest of the people in the group. you don't stop getting messages until they stop replying (or, if the originator of the message removes you - but i'm not even sure if they can do that since i don't have an iphone).

You get charged to receive text messages? Is that the US? Sounds like something their carriers would do. Dreading being asked to work over there. Ridiculous carriers they've got.

Most do. Verizon in particular I know charges $0.20 per SMS, $0.25 per mms...sent vs received is irrelevant.

It depends on the carrier. Everyone I now has unlimited texts.

(US)

Oh...so since everyone you know has unlimited texts, apple shouldn't fix this?

Lol I'm half being facetious...but the point is still valid. I can pretty much guarantee not everyone has unlimited texts...

No apple should fix it regardless if it has any potential to cost people money or not. I know several people who don't have unlimited texts I would hope if this cost anyone money Apple will do the right thing...

even if you have unlimited text... getting a bunch of text that has nothing to do with me.. notifications... soo damn annoying!!!!1

...and apparently, to the apple fanboys, the fact that i don't have an iphone and am happy with android means this isn't a bug.

Really? And you want us to help you?

So ask them to end the conversation and start a new one that doesn't include you.

Wait until it hits something like Yahoo Groups or sites that do digests. It sounds very much like Friendster which has been banned by quite a few group sites for spam. No one wants an inbox full of crap whether you pay for it or not. Once members are banned from using it ----

Here is where I demonstrate my ignorance...I do not text...it is a feature I never, ever use but, of course, I cannot remove the damned app. Are you saying that my carrier (Verizon) can charge me for messages sent to me even if they are never received or opened??

If so, how can I protect myself from this abuse???

If you are notified that someone has sent you a "text" (an SMS or MMS message) then you have received it. Call Verizon and have them deactivate messaging services on your account and you won't ever get any.
