Apple, the groundbreakers!!

No links because I saw it on the weather channel, and I have to leave for work. But, apperantly , the next iphone is going to sport an nfc. It also mentioned using it to pay at select retail locations at launch. Wonder if they are scrambling to catch up, or if they were working on it all along. Considering Apple has always been "grounbreaking, I think google gave them the idea.

I know, but do you think apple got the idea from google, or do you think they were working on it all along on their own.

been in development and standardization... for long time in industry by other parties.
it is up to phone makers to adopt it.

my answer.. neither.

This was a tech that has been used in Asia for some now tho right?

Good points, but up until now, nobody has shown any interest of bringing it to mobile in the states. Now, they both want too. Who is follow whos lead by trying to mainstream it in America?

Neither, they are following the lead of Asian markets. They want deeper penetration into Asian markets, and are adopting the technology that Asian consumers expect.

Like 3D on phones is already out overseas in Asia, China... somewhere over there.

About mainstreaming....look at front facing cameras on recent phones. First, phones from years ago had it already. So its nothing new.

Between Android and the iPhone it came out on the EVO first. But most iFans during and right after the launch of the iPhone 4 mentioned FFC like it was something the iPhone had and Android didnt...lol Or like Apple invented FFC.

Some iFans and regular iPhone users (yea there is a difference between a fanatic and a user) think the iPhone 4 is the only phone in the world with that screen resolution. I had to remind someone that there is a Chinese Android phone with the same resolution.

So the iPhone having it will probably get it more attention, just because its on the iPhone. I'm not discounting Android and how far they have come, but Apple is like a household name. Funny thing is, Android is just as much of a household name in my area now too. I live in the DC, MD, VA area.

I'm not surprised the US market is still behind on cell phone technology. I remember when color displays were a huge new feature here and then hearing how they'd been common in Europe for years already at that point. Figures that things wouldn't have changed too much.

I definitely believe there will be hordes of fanboys convinced it's new technology that Apple just invented though. If Apple is the first to introduce a feature, they're innovators bringing new ideas to the market. If Apple is the last to introduce a feature, they're innovators bringing new ideas to the market. You've got to admire their marketing department for inspiring such fervor at least...

I wish it was the same here. I just had somebody this morning ask if my myTouch Slide was a new iPhone.

LOL, really? It's already implemented here in my country. But I'm sure Steve Jobs will claim it's the "first" again like a youtube commenter.

Tangent,

I just heard from my 11 y.o. daughter that they be talking about Android phones in her school. (it goes to the 8th grade) She saw an iPhone commercial tonight. She never heard of it before tonight. But she knew Android already.

She said her mother has to get that iPhone 4, you can read books on it. (she was responding to what the commercial was promoting) I said I can do that on my Android phone too. She was like you can??? And that was the end of her wanting her mother to get an iPhone...lol She loves my Droid 1 and X. Whenever I cant find them I ask her before I start looking...its that bad.

The times are a changing....

But, I do notice more n more iPad and iPhone 4 commercials now that the iPhone is coming to Verizon. Amazingly, I havent seen a Droid commercial in awhile. Guess that will change when the Bionic and other Droid phones come out on Verizon.

^Thank you, like Android topics on a Apple, iPhone board wont be saying anything negative....lol

Its like going to a Dallas Cowboys board and starting topics about the Redskins...you will see some negativity in there I'm sure.

Given the Redskins' treatment of McNabb, I think there would be a lot of positive remarks on a Cowboys board ;)

The only think Jobs is claiming is that he's still alive. Good or bad, look for Tim Cook as Apple's spokesperson.

I go by the plethora of kids at bus stops on my way to work in the mornings.
I used to see kids out there with their white earbuds all the time holding and comparing their iPods.
I don't see that half as much anymore.
Most kids want to text, and so I see a lot of them with phones that have slide out keyboards.
So they are either texting phones or Android based.

That being said all of my coworkers that have smartphones all have Android based phones.
I don't see as many iPhones as I used to, and I used to see lots of them.

Have times changed? Probably.
Until the next 'flavor of the month' comes along at least.

When I had my Nokia N97 (last year) a number of people thought it was an iPhone or called it an iPhone. I'm actually not too surprised. The reason is that when I went to purchase my first smartphone, I didn't know what was available. I did know that there was the iPhone (due to the heavy marketing hype) and BlackBerry (as my company uses them), but little else. It wasn't until I went to the store looking for a smartphone that I realised there were so many other devices available. If you have never used or cared about smartphones before, chances are you have heard of the iPhone and possibly nothing else. Apple has done a very good job of marketing the iPhone that many non-smartphone users have probably heard of the iPhone.

By the way, people keep calling my Puffs facial tissue Kleenex for some reason. Don't they know there are other brands of facial tissues? ;)

It seems Android forums have an unusual amount of iPhone discussion on them, compared to Apple forums. Just saying.

Eh, must be where you go. I spend uite abit of time on MMI and they often have orticles related to Android. The discussion is usually people bashing on Android (and 95% of those people have never used it). Admittedly I never bahed Android (yes I can honestly say this), but it did take me quite a while to pick it up. Happy I did though!

Despite the occasional flames, we tend to be more tolerant and have used both devices.

And from another forum's user sig - with apologies to Voltaire, but if Apple hadn't existed first, Google would have had to invent it.

Sharp has one, same size as iP4, Android but available in Japan only. Seems to be a good device.

Google was already working on Android when the iPhone was released. Android was in development years before the iPhone was released, so yes... if the iPhone hadn't been around, it Google would have brought it to market.

That being said, I agree, we are more tolerant of iOS here than Apple users are of Android.

What I find interesting are the Japanese Android phones with the 3D screens. That seems absolutely mind boggling to me. Could you imagine the actual 3D games you could play on your phone? 3D first person shooters?

Maybe the reason is that iPhone users don't know there are other smartphones out there to bash. ;)

In any case, there are fanboys for any product or brand name. You just have to mentally filter them out.

I'm glad iPhones will have NFC personally. That way Android phones and iPhones will actually have that in common and there will be an industry standard. If Apple decided to use a different technology then it would become a competition.
