Apps detecting wrong OS version

Ever since I have updated to Android 9.0 I have run into a few apps and websites that seem to not be able to tell what version I am running. One of these apps is my HomeBrite app which controls all of the lights in my house (so I kinda want it to work). I have posted screen shots showing I do have Android 9 installed as well as the error messages. Any idea how to fix this? or is this something that gets fixed with the app itself being updated?

Just taking a wild guess here but regarding the HomeBrite app, given that there's an overwhelming number of one-star reviews apparently the app itself is pretty crappy, irregardless of which version of Android.

But you might want to try and go into your Settings >> Apps menu, find the HomeBrite entry, tap the 'Force stop' button, then go into Storage and tap on the 'Clear cache' button. If the app still can't detect what version of OS is running, go through the process again but this time tap on 'Clear data' instead. This should return the app back to it's originally installed state so you'll need to go through the whole process of setting the app up from scratch again.
If the app is still unable to detect the OS version, try contacting the developers of the app. They might have some insight on the problem or maybe reveal when or if they'll be releasing a newer version of their app that's compatible with Oreo.

Sounds to me like a poorly-coded app. Android 9 is the first Android release that doesn't include a decimal component in its version number; it's possible that's breaking whatever check the app is using to detect the OS version.

Definitely reach out to the developers and let them know.

The HomeBrite app was last updated back in June, Android 9.0 Pie came out in August for Pixel phones. So I guess the app has just never been tested, and is due for an update. And could be similar for the other apps as well.

Ok, that seems on par with what I was thinking. Svim, I tried your suggestion but it didn't work. CodeSplice, you may be on to something. Comparing an Int to a Double may be causing an issue.

I will contact the devs, thanks.
