Help apps, sms, contact list - vanished...

ducks

Lurker
had a slightly odd issue today (HTC One X) where I kept getting messages saying that several of the (compulsory) google apps, including Play, had quit - even though I wasn't running them at the time, whenever I tried to start an app that originally came from the play store.

restarted phone. On restart, it went through a process of asking my name and location. I then found that a big chunk of installed apps (mostly games, tbf) had vanished; Facebook had reverted to an earlier version; notification sounds have changed, all my sms messages have disappeared and so have nearly all (but not quite all) my contacts - all from phone and sim have disappeared.

Some of the apps I've paid for, and some of the games I spent ages playing, so that's a pita - but not as much of a pita as losing all my contacts.

when I try to reinstall the apps - including bitdefender and lookout - I get an "unknown error -24" message. If I can at least work out how to bypass that I'll be happier, and happier yet if I could work out wtf happened...

thanks for any ideas,

sophie

I can't reinstall anything, because there is an unknown error -24... I'm assuming there is data left behind somewhere. I'm also a bit worried about why this happened.

I will try that link, thank you!

Sorry, I missed the last paragraph :o

Can you try clearing the cache and data on the Play Store app, see if that resolves the error -24?

Settings -> Apps -> All -> Play Store -> Clear Cache/Data.

nah :-( I tried that already and it doesn't help at all. I've also found that with the jellybean update I can't mount my phone as a disk drive to manually get at the data and because my laptop is old and tiny, the version of OSX I'm running won't run HTC sync. This is infuriating.:mad::mad::mad: What is the point of taking away the ability to mount it as a drive?! I used to use iphoto to pull the pictures off the phone, or just bulk move the jpegs; as far as I can see now the only way to do it via dropbox.

aaargh.

thanks for the suggestions, anyway!

ETA: and how am I suppose to put music on it now?!

I think a proper factory reset is the only thing to do, but I'm a bit concerned as to why it actually happened in the first place.

Hopefully the factory reset sorts everything. It is weird that it happened, since I usually only hear about issues like that on rooted devices that have kernel panics or memory corruption.
