Apps to go with stock messaging app?

I know there are loads of apps with super customizable options but I guess I'm "old-fashioned" because I feel weird using these? I still feel the need to check the stock messaging app so I know i got the right messages and things. There's an app so a notification pops up from the stock app. Is there one the adds on to the stock to customize the look? Wallpapers and bubble conversations and the like? Or one to make custom text tones for different contacts? Or really any other add on apps? Any help would be very appreciated!

I don't know of anything that "enhances" the stock messenger.

I use GOSms Pro. I does all of the things you requested. A free add on to it, allows for notifications. There is also Handcent, which is another replacement messenger.

Go ahead take the plunge. You can always go back to the original if you don't like the replacements.
