Apps vs. Web

I'm new to smartphones, don't even have my Incredible yet, and new to the idea of apps and whatnot.

Looking through app sites and the marketplace I see many apps for websites. Engadget, Ebay, Paypal, Dictionary.com, etc.

Why an app instead of just visiting the website? Is the app a "mobile version" of the page?

Thanks for answering what is I'm sure a dumb question.

Most of the time these apps give better mobile functionality than the full website or even their mobile version. When viewing through a browser you are limited in where and how you can layout things, but with a full blown app you can program it however you want.

I prefer the full site to the app or mobile site on most websites. I use a Hero, I would think the Incredible and others would have no problems either.

I've decided to stay away from some apps as it is easier to use the mobile site and save the space in your phone memory.

I'd suggest testing it out though and if you like the app then keep it. If not, just save the site in your bookmarks for easy use.

I remember reading an article where the author speculated that eventually all apps will just be HTML5 websites optimized for phones. Right now apps provide functionality such as directly uploading pics, or push notifications that are harder to do using a website (even mobile versions). Usually I prefer the mobile webpage version unless there's a specific feature that the app version has and I need it.

Most of the time i'd rather have an app as they're usually quicker to load (all that's needed to download is the data/content not the structure), display better and provide better functionality. The only one that's worse i've found is phandroid (:P) as it doesn't have the forums built in so I have to go to the website anyway.

Same question I was just searching for...in my opinion apps give you just what you need without all the extras (i.e. ads you never pay attention to). I think the biggest question (not sure of this) would be is using apps more secure as opposed to using a web browser...specifically paypal, ebay, banking, etc.
