What's the entry or command to tell Aquamail to delete mail on its servers only?

When I delete, using the delete command in Aquamail, messages vanish from all accounts. I have msg that are kept elsewhere. Some are on the Linux Box, and some I keep in the laptop. All of them don't need to be on the phone.

If I delete from the Windows 7Pro laptop, using Fossamail, the items are still in Aquamail. The same goes for Thunderbird on Mint.

Android preference not withstanding, email on the phone is secondary. I don't like typing complicated replies on the phone. I prefer a physical keyboard. I keep some messages on the phone for convenience only.

I also get mail via POP3 or IMAP. Main account is GMX, not Gmail. I refuse to use the web pages if I can.

it seems to be under Settings/Mail, Other

I'm also wondering if the host account can be set to keep all files archived....
I know that Yahoo and Gmail can.... they can Archive every thing that comes in if you want.

What I did was to create a special folder that I called "_Inbox"

I chose that name so that it floats to the top of the list.
Every email that comes is, is copied to that folder and it stays there until I physically delete it.

Spam, every thing.... but, it is all there. Spam might get filtered before the Filter that copies the inbox takes effect.

I got in the habit of doing that years ago with Mozilla Thunderbird sometimes not honoring my request to not delete the Host email....

I don't want. The laptop keeps the kid's crazy posts from Viber and her email. I also store receipts there since I have a wireless printer and can print them out without resorting to USB drives. They don't need to be on the phone, either.

I did see that setting in Mail, other, but it didn't tell me exactly what I wanted to know. I use Yahoo and Gmail for those who might want to spam. The in app is what got me. All of the messages are in app.

Thunderbird does have local folders in the menu. You put the email in the local and it stays there even if deleted. Fossamail has that, too. GMX can also archive. I don't do it since I usually forget to clean it out.

I'd need help starting a local folder on the ext. SD card and using ES File Manager to put saved mail there and have Aquamail forbidden.

Thanks for the suggestion, though.

Then I suggest you create the "_inBox" and then use Filters to trap the senders whom you want to make sure they don't get lost.

That way, only things you want preserved will stay in the _InBox

In AquaMail look in:
Account settings > Account options > Deleting messages.
However, there is no option 'Leave on server, delete on phone only' which is apparently what you're looking for.

It's not clear what accounts you have are POP3 and what are IMAP. Just remember, IMAP syncs folders across all your devices and computers. If you delete email on say, the laptop and it's still in AquaMail, then either...
1. It's not an IMAP account.
2. For some reason it's failing to sync due to:
2a. Something in setup
2b. Communication problems with the client/server or
2c. Using MS Outlook (2b)
3. AquaMail has not made a mail pass since the deletions to sync things up.

I don't sync. If I delete from Fossamail on the laptop, it doesn't delete from FX on Mint or Aquamail on Android.
The laptop is the primary computer where I file the stuff. However, if I delete from Aquamail, it disappears from the other emails.

Fossamail does say archive on server. All accounts are IMAP now, I think. Some no longer use POP3. I have all folders set to not download unless I manually sync. I want certain messages in certain areas.

I looked up the FAQ on the Aquamail site, and it said something about a long press to delete and the msg. were archived on the card. If you can read that and clarify it, I'd appreciate it.
http://www.aqua-mail.com/?page_id=227 - third line down. I need to make sure that it is saying what I think it is.

I'm thinking about this. Meanwhile check my last post. I added some stuff. And please, check which accounts are still POP3, if any.

Dunno what I was thinking... There is an option which is 'Leave on server, delete on phone only' but it's called 'Hide on phone, leave on server'. Access it either by Account options or long-press on a message listing. A long-press will not save email to a card, and the FAQ makes no such claim.

Fossamail's 'Archive on server' is the same thing by a different name. It deletes (hides) only in Fossamail (AquaMail).

Well, that "hide function" is a PITA to use, I would just as soon leave it greyed out and go on.... for things like that, I just touch the 'STAR' and keep moving.... that leaves it on the server for me to look at later on my big PC.... then I decide what to do with it...

I did see that once hidden, the 3 dot menu adds a "restore hidden" at the bottom.

It's probably the last option. I don't sync Aquamail automatically, only when I need it. I do all my email on the laptop and clean it out then. It's just business and information that will be stored. If I have an answer to a question about a product, I'd like the reply on the phone since I will have the phone when I check out the product. I don't need How To Geek and the kid's moggies all over the phone's mail.

I read the info that the msg would be deleted from the server, then eventually from the app. I think the limit was 250 msg.

Deleting from the app makes me think msg are stored in the phone's memory somewhere. The "eventually" gets me.
Does that mean 250 msg will be deleted from server first, then 250 from the phone at another time? (I read the whole FAQ on the web page and can't remember which thread I saw that in.)

How would you make another private save a copy to folder on the card?

Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the star info. In TB and others that means importance, not saving.

That's only a default setting. In Account settings you can specify an overall setting keeping up to 10,000 emails or in folder settings you can tap on the gear icon for an individual folder and set per folder limits up to 10,000 emails. For instance you might have an account where the default 250 is OK by you except a 'Keepers' folder that you basically never want anything deleted unless you do it. So you set that folder to a 5000 or 10,000 limit, effectively unlimited.

Deleted email is not stored in phone memory by any email client.

Does that mean 250 msg will be deleted from server first, then 250 from the phone at another time?
Email is not deleted in batches of 250. When a folder reaches it's limit of 250 emails (or 500 or 2500 - whatever the limit is set for the account default or for that particular folder) then if you add say, 10 more emails, the oldest 10 are deleted to make room. This would happen on the phone, then sync on the server with the next mail pass.

How would you make another private save a copy to folder on the card?
I'm not sure what you mean by this. "Private save"?. As far as saving a copy "on the card" no email client I'm aware of can save copies on a SD card, if that's what you mean.

Thanks for the star info. In TB and others that means importance, not saving.
Correct. It's just a marker. Has nothing to do with saving or deleting other than a reminder.

You can set Aqua Mail to download only the title and the 1st line of the text, it will not download all of the message, nor will it download images, so nothing on the phone at that point.... I see a lot of stuff on my phone and just tap the msg title which adds a check mark... I do that for as many as I want to just 'get rid of' and then hit the Trash Can.... ( I subscribe to a lot of newsletters... and delete most of them just by referencing the title )

as I just mentioned, you can configure Aqua Mail to only download the title, or the title and a small piece of the text. Nothing else is pulled from the server. I have mine set to "unlimited" msgs, with just title and 1st couple of lines. It does not download the message itself until I open the message... this causes a slight delay, but I don't care about that.

?? I had not even thought of doing that, hmmm. That would require accessing the data from the phone's internal memory and copying it to the extSDcard.
Okay, I have just opened a message and hit the 3 dots: I see an option to "Copy/Send/Share/Print"
Using that option brings up:

  • copy message as text
  • Copy message headers
  • Send/Share/Print message text
  • Print via Google Cloud Print
  • Send to Calendar
I just did 'Copy msg as text' and the screen went back to the message.... so I assume it went into a 'clipboard buffer'.
I opened up 'Color Note' and tried to 'paste it to that editor with a Long Press, and nothing happened. so nix that idea.

OH, just learned something.... IF you already have ColorNote open with a TextMsg started, you can copy the text from Aqua Mail and Paste it into ColorNote. Just now did the Copy title only and that worked.

and now, I just opened an Alert Message from American Express telling me that a 'Non-Card Presented Purchase has been made.... I used the 3 dot menu and select option #1, copy message as text, and pasted it into the already opened ColorNote... see the example, it works.

You are welcome, I enjoy research and have taught computer use as a hobby and as part of my prior On The Job to an employer...... was told I should quit and just be a 'paid consultant'.... nah, that comes with expectations of Brilliance and Success :) and teaching students is so fraught with conflicts :) :)

yes, the STAR to me, just indicates the message is important enough to stop me from just inadvertently deleting it later w/o reviewing it once again. I have two stages of that. I leave the message greyed as out 'read and starred' or I will mark it as 'Unread and Starred'.... the latter to me means it is very important that I act upon this message when I get back to my Desktop PC and can provide more attention, and/or detail to the sender or my Records Keeping

EDIT: I SEE THAT 'CRASHDAMAGE' HAS ADDED MORE TO THE TOPIC, I just learned more from his message.

I know the msg don't get deleted in groups of 250 all at once, but I have no idea of how many I have or when the msg arrived.

I do have other settings, I think GMX has them and that's why the confusion. I didn't realize it until you got me started digging further. I saw a backup to Yahoo Mail. I'd had Yahoo for years and when Yahoo got pesty I got around the charge for IMAP by getting a few saved email out for a time using GMX and that must have been four years ago. I see the old folders are still on GMX on the phone, so I would have to go to the main site and reconfigure. There are 3 or 4 archive folders on GMX picked up from Yahoo. I don't use the web site unless password messes up. I've never even looked at Yahoo on the phone. I might on the tablet, but I use Startpage Browser and check in as a desktop.

It's simply got everything in Aquamail to sync from the old Yahoo email. I've gotta do a major cleanup somewhere.

From my own perspective, Aqua Mail has been a Godsend for me.

It can easily handle anything, and everything that I want to do with my emails.

I bounce back and forth between the phone and the websites for Yahoo email and Gmail....
if I need a filter to do something, it is easier to do that from a Desktop PC on the website itself.

but for casual email maintenance? Aqua Mail on my phone is now allowing me to take care of all of my email accounts at once.... from anywhere I might be. Nice.

My Gmail account is 'free account',

my Yahoo account is a Paid Account and has been for 20+ years..... and I will always keep that one, because I can have an unlimited number of throw away email addresses... they look like this:

JackSpratSecure-JerkOffVendor@yahoo.com

now, if I see spam coming in from that vendor, I just delete the throw away email address....

I never, ever, allow anyone to see my base email account address.

I'm just saying that for some reason, Aquamail picked up almost all settings and folders from GMX servers and put them on one account on the phone. It was originally POP3, but I had to change to IMAP. I hadn't looked in the total menu for years. The changes are not obvious unless you really dig for them. You and Crashdamage started me really digging which I hadn't done after first using Aquamail. I hadn't changed anything except the incoming method,

I hadn't seen anything beyond the usual type folders like inbox, sent, spam, etc. I certainly didn't expect to find a Yahoo folder on the phone. Yahoo only used for some spam and groups. I don't even have any contacts in it and the current folders are different on the Yahoo account. I had aggregated all email from Yahoo and stashed it in GMX. I think the folder is empty, to boot on GMX site.

I do have a workaround now when deleting since all I have to do is get that folder into Fossamail and Tbird. I can fix the folder on GMX site. I can archive from either Linux or Windows, then.

I've used other 3rd party email apps, and they haven't done so. Neither does the default one (Not Gmail - it's disabled) I like GMX and Aquamail. I got annoyed with Google when they started that BUZZ thing and enrolled everyone without asking, and now that's only used for buying from Play.

Yahoo kept getting spoofed, and since that's mostly for spam, I'd just change the password. GMX looked pretty good and I've been using it for years. I have 2 GMX addresses. One is GMX,com the other is GMX.us. It's the US that gives people fits.
Some sites want only GMX.de.

Thanks for making me dig. That's a big help along with some of the explanations.

The digging is how I keep my ole 73 year young brain working, and refusing to go find a hole to die in.

On Aqua Mail, I finally just Turned OFF, the Smart Folder....

To me, that is just ONE PAIN IN THE ASS. Simply because when I am working with an Email Account, I have my thoughts concentrated on what I want to do "in that account".. like you, I have several different ones, for different reasons....

I actually enjoy the fact that Aqua Mail can see, and let me use, all of the Sub-Folders that I have created, and there are over 50 of them... I keep important mail in Sub-Folders.

ie, a horrible traffic accident back in Jan '08 where an 18 wheeler ran over me and my motorcycle.
I have all of the email back and forth between my lawyer, myself ( all sent emails too ), and associates of his for research.... all of that is stored in that Sub-Folder.....

I got a real tickle once about 3 years into the Lawsuit, my lawyer asked me if I had a copy of a certain email from back about 3 months after the accident.... I found it in about 15 minutes and forwarded it to him. He was amazed.

that accident for those who like to see broken motorcycles.

I have recovered, and back on the horse again.

Taken down in Dawsonville, Ga at my son's home.... on the morning I had to leave and head back to Oklahoma and home.... it rained all that day, made for some interesting travel moments... like waiting under a gas station awning for the Rains to stop again :)

Never did like the smart folder. General rule - things that are supposed to be smart - ain't.

It got a little strange as it was 3 OS and 3 different mail.

Tbird and FossaMail do let you add a local folder that you download into and then can delete from the server by setup of IMAP

We gave up on the bike. The Vulcan is getting too scattered. He just wants to take it easy.

To me the Smart Folder is genius. Not just a simple combined inbox, it lets me filter email into folders and still see those emails in a combined inbox (or not - my choice). No need to leave email in the accounts' inboxes to see them in a combined inbox. And it does other tricks too.

A brilliant idea! Some desktop clients like Thunderbird can do a trick or two like the Smart Folder but there's nothing else like it I'm aware of in any other mobile client.
